Started playing SH5 about a week ago, I can't help myself. Screenshot madness atm. :D

My God never knew SH5 is so beautiful.

How's the gameplay compared to SH3?

Do they have Type IX, Type II and XXI too just as in SH3?

Go check out the SH5 Screenshots threads. You'll be amazed.

Read some of those threads. It has problems, but, like SH3 and SH4, much progress is being made with mods.

No, no and no. They do however have for different models of the Type VII, and you can walk completely through all of them. Go check out the SH5 forum.

nope. Just the VIIB/C boats career ends 1943 but open horizons mod enables career to last till end of the war. Game play is way different to SH3, SH5 comes with an rpg feel to it, controls/interface are different to the previous SH releases. DarkWraith has some nice UI mods for SH5. AI is a bit dummed down IRAI AI mod fixes that.

Its a nice game though if your willing to accept the changes. Graphic wise there is no sub sim that can match it. :)

Umm but there's still the dynamic campaign right.

I just need a blunt honest no BS opinion. Will the game upset the player in stock?

That's the only yardstick I'm weighing. Silent Hunter IV was upsetting enough to me.

If SH5 is worse than SH4 when it came out(Half finished, needing more polish) I wouldn't buy it. It's better not to buy a game that will upset you for having spent money on it. I don't like rewarding developer for buggy rough games.

If it's good I will probably get one along with Shogun 2 and Dragon Age 2 from a Hong Kong online retailer because it's not stocked here. It's fairly cheap. If they hadn't dropped the online connection requirement I'd probably have never even considered getting it in the first place no matter what.

Would be cool to be able to walk through the entire Type VII.

Have a 3 foot model of it outside my room. The old picture of it(I have added substantial weathering to it since for the better imo, largely white including band of tiny white splotches along upper of the fuel ballast)

Ehr... honestly, I quite enjoyed the game at release, because I found workarounds for the more glaring issues. But, it's simply lacking too much to be recommendable. From a broken stadimeter, which prompted me to make a scope mod that could be used to measure distance, to AI that seemed to ignore you half the time and an interface that was missing half its functionality.

Modders really fixed it up to something acceptable though, but that's not what you're asking. And yes, dynamic campaign is still there.

Just my 2$

:salute: Thank you for the no BS assessment though I was expecting PM :O:. That's very honest of you ;). I figured it was like that too hence never bothered to try to get it in the first place. I'm sure the mods will get some stuffs sorted out eventually and to some degree they have but if the patched stocked is a psychological torture to enjoy I see no point in getting it.

you ask what its like I give you my opinion then you say no BS. That was my honest opinion! :damn:

I can only tell you how I feel about the game but its up to you, you will just have to buy it to see for yourself.

Dynamic Campiagn - yup
RPG - kinda like grind questing eg In 1943 one mission is to sink 220,000 tons. You have a couple of months to complete the missions.
Walk around in your sub.
Crew have skills points
Graphic detail is A+ even better with Environment 5 mod.

The bad:
AI is abit dodgy in stock
Interface is lacking or just confusing at first
No IX boats
Campaign ends in 43

Is it better than SH3 and 4 as stock release? IMO yes!

Arclight 01-31-11 12:56 PM

Well, I'd like to add that, like I said, I did enjoy it, even before it was patched.

With TDW's latest project you have the more critical mods in one package, kind of a community patch, so it's a fairly easy route to travel on the way to a better SH5.

On the one hand: yes, Ubi screwed us over. But one the other hand: at this point it's a fair purchase, and you support the genre, maybe even help keep it alive.

Wouldn't write it off to easily.

This post by Sailor Steve should be made a sticky for those wanting to know if they should get SH5. :)

2. It's garbage. Stay as far away as possible.

3. Everything in between.

There are people who play it and love it, and there are people who have played it and hate it, and there are people who play it and sort-of like it but think it could be better, and think it will be better with time.

The only way you can know which one you are is to actually buy it and play it.

I'm sorry if I seem callous, but it seems like someone asks that exact same question every single week.

Sailor Steve 01-31-11 02:42 PM

@ Castout: I had no problem answering on question, especially as it related to the graphics, as illustrated on kiwi_2005's desktop. Anything further should really be asked in the SH5 forums. There is plenty there to see.
