Although I have the game on Windows 7 on a fast desktop rig, some days ago I did install it on my gaming laptop in Windows 10. I didn't have to switch on compatibility mode or something, but that's because in the installer I have changed the install location to
C:\Games\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific which is a free accessible folder. I would do the same with SH3 / SH5. Maybe if you don't have a dedicated security suite, then you need to set an exception rule in Windows Defender or savegames may not be written in your Documents\SH4 folder. Also if you use megamods, the readme warns you that you must start a new carrer, old saves won't work. What I had to do is to set a framerate cap to 300 for the game, otherwise the game goes crazy FPS when in the menu. I'm playing with these mods over SH4 U-Boat Missions v. 1.5: 1.0 TMO_RSRDC_OTC 1.5_OTC_Realistic Scopes for 16 to 9 RSRDCv502 1.5_OTC_German PPI Screen 2.0 Ralles ModPack for TMO_RSRDC_OTC Greetings, XS |
Hi everyone, long time no play! Getting back into SH4.
I have a laptop without a disk drive so I went ahead and bought the UPlay version to download ($3...it's cheaper than a disk drive). I had trouble getting it to work. I tried running as an administrator and in compatibility mode with Windows XP (SP2), but neither action seemed to work. **Last, I changed the resolution scale from 125% to 100%. Everything on my laptop screen is super tiny, but now the game works! This was not in any of the threads I had read thus far, so I hope this helps someone! :salute: |
Welcome back!

SH4 Gold won't load in Win10
I tried loading SH4 Gold on a new Dell laptop and when I try to start the game I get a big red message that 'This app has been blocked for your protection'. Running Win 10 Home on a Dell with 12 gig ram and a latest generation I7 processor. Disabled UAC - no help. Program is installed on C drive in a newly created Games folder. Thanks for any suggestions. I've gone through the SH4 on Win 10 threads and didn't find an answer.

When you installed SH4, did you also install the Windows DirectX v9.0c and Windows Media Codecs that came with the SH4 install?

New Install
With Microsoft dropping support for Windows 7 and my computer being a bit of a relic I now have a new (YAY) beast of a PC with Win 10 pro on it.
I did an install of SH4 and it is up and running just fine so far with my favorite mods but I have just one question. During the install I was prompted to register my product with UBI. I declined, but I expect to get prompted to register it again in a few days. Is there ANY reason at all I should need to do this? Anything negative at all that would affect my game by not registering it? Install was from the Gold edition CD. Thank you in advance. |
Welcome back!

registering just identifies you to Ubi as a licensed user. Ubi would use it for updates, notices, etc but since Ubi doesn't do that for SH4 anymore, not-registering will have no effect on your use. party-out, dude!:haha: good luck and good hunting! :Kaleun_Salute: |

So....
Tried to reinstall SH4 under WIN10, and tried all above for a day. No joy. Utterly frustrated, decided its another time, and got UBOAT on steam sale. UBOAT didnt ignite with me yet, reverted to boardgames. Had to update IRFANVIEW program to scan a depth gauge to print, and clicked SH4 exe for the heck of it as I scrolled by.... It launched!!! So, FWIW, IRFANVIEW seems to get me back...:salute: Edit: now SH5 also works again... |
windows 10 in new rig, new problems!!
Hi everyone.
So I upgraded my rig, and after reading everything and tested everything I could, I concluded that my laptop doesn't want to run SH4 in any resolution but 1024x768 in windowed mode. On that resolution, it works like a charm (intel grpahics, as it doesn't like my nvidia, although it doesn't need it), but now I'm out of ideas. The big question is if there is a solution for that. (I've tried the cgf files, I already checked the net framework thing, and all good, LAA, etc.) Mostly, everything was covered and I ran out of ideas... Some of my specs. GTX 1660 Ti Windows 10 10.0.18363 18363 and 16GB RAM. Many thanks to all. :wah: :/\\!! :wah: :/\\!! :wah: :/\\!! :wah: |
With my 'modern' Win10 laptop, I have the Windows display settings the same as the "Native" resolution of the display monitor, and have the game set the same. I do not have a dual-card set-up like you though... but anyway, matching that, and then I right-click the SH4.exe file, and choose "Properties", and then the "Compatibility" tab. Just for SnGs, I chose "Run as an administrator" (it should not be necessary), since I was there, but the thing that helped it to actually function correctly was to click on the "Change high DPI settings", and I chose "High DPI scaling Overide - Overide high DPI scaling behavior. Scaling performed by: <Application>". That did the trick for my laptop.
