An American in Austria? No problem at all.
You bing your own money? Perfect.
You try to learn the language to show your sobriety and dedication for your new home? Welcome Mr. Neal Stevens from Texas.

Join some local clubs to get accepted and try to avoid any political discussion at first. When you are known to be a nice guy, feel free to engage.
No weapons allowed to be carried around, but you don't have to consider someone else to draw a weapon. Austria is a pretty secure palce.
If you want to use your handguns - join a shooting club.

You want to avoid winter? Not in Austrian mountains. At least 6 months of winter conditions, short spring, short summer, short breathtaking fall.

A loaf of bread (1000g) is -.79 € to 5.20 €. It depends on where and what quality you want to buy. In Germany and Austria you have a choice of at least 2500 different sorts of bread, but of course not all are offered in your next bakery or supermarket. You may choose from 25 to 50 different sorts of bread within reasonable distance to your home.
The bread is totally different to the soft US bread, because the wheat is different, resulting in a cross crust. You'll get soft bread too (white sandwich bread or hamburger buns), but you'll have to take what you get. Taxes are to support the community. Use the communal installations and you get your money back.
TV charges are to be paid, as it is considered a public task to inform the people (they expanded the charges on the internet access recently).

The Austrians are individuals as everywhere around the globe. You'll find genius and idiots, it depends much on yourself anyway.
Common predictions: conservative, still countryfied, traditional, slow, depressive (Vienna), often grumpy, very servile with tourists, complain over the weather, have delicious food and drink too much wine.

If you haven't done before - come over here on vacation and see yourself.
In a tourist region you will have no problems with English. They may have a problem with your English.

Lake Constance may be a nice place to live - insisting on living in Austria and having some nice climate.
It's just a hop into Switzerland and Germany - and Italy and even France isn't far away.
Or Tirol - north to Italy. Nice, mild and healthy climate too.

Excellent summary, thanks, I love that kind of stuff. It really gives a flavor of a different part of the world.

6 months of winter??? :06: Wait, that won't work....

Denmark would have been my first, second, and third choice had I decided to immigrate when I was 30. Lots and lots of beautiful blonde women, pretty amazing, really. But alas, those days are long behind me.

So, how are the winters in Germany?? I have already sampled the roads on a motorcycle and they are fantastic. One German phrase I learned the hard way was Einbanhe Strasse. :88)

eddie 09-16-13 11:39 PM

I don't know much about the winters there Neal, but a firend of mine who lives in Uelzen (southeast of Hamburg) makes it sound like the winters there aren't much worse then what we have here in the midwest, and I'm talking about the Dakotas, Minnesota and Wisconsin area.

Of course that might be darned cold to you Texans!:)

Einbahnstraße = One-way road, for all those who don't speak German.:sunny:

The Winters here depend on where you are. Near the Alps you will pretty much have a "good" winter every year. Here in central Germany it can be everything from no snow at all up to 3-4 months in snow. On occasion temperatures can go down as far as -20°C / -4°F (but that is fairly seldom).

:har:

Ask Steve! None of us showed up at the Sub the next day!
:hmmm:
Or was that late to the Texas?

We were there for the Texas visit (I still remember your comments about someone else's driving actions) :)

It was the Cavalla visit we missed because of our Grey Wolves Meet at the Flying Saucer (the name of a bar in Houston for those who are wondering) then we had Grants famous speech near the end of the evening...."I love you too much Jim" :D

Why? because they are on the top 10 list of most happy countries.

They are number 8, but the top 7 are all frozen snow realms, not enough motorcycle riding time. And Austria's cousin, Australia, is full of deadly spiders, snakes, and birds, too risky. I will see what is required to emigrate to Austria and set up a small mountain cottage. What's the cost of living like in Austria? Is there a bunch of crazy taxes, like England's TV tax? :shifty: What does a loaf of bread cost in Austria? I know gas is high, but I can deal with that.

What language do Austrians speak? Any other helpful tips are welcome

I live in the suburbs and regularly go camping in the bush . I have never seen deadly spiders , birds , crocs or sharks . A handful of snakes in 50 years . Get your facts right . I must admit , lots of axe wielding psychopathic killers but deadly animals are rare .

Come down to Spain where you can pretty much drive all year as long it doesn't rain.

Neal says the thread is just getting good, but I think he's a little Bitner about it. It needs to get Bach on track. Of course he'll think I'm a Bloch head for saying that. He Haas no clue, and is living in a a fool's Paradis. He needs to relax in a Spa, eat some Sauseng and then a little Schubert for dessert.

So Lang for now. :sunny:

vienna 09-19-13 12:52 PM

Coors, bilmey, Steve...another pun war?...
