Not sure CCIP. I have not heard of anything. Then again there was no word it was coming off. However, if it goes to a memorial then so be it. Beats rotting away in the murky waters of the harbor. Edit: Word has it the prop will be part of a display for the Torsk proper at her pier!!!! :yeah: March 4, 1968 - Torsk was decomissioned at the Boston Naval Shipyard. |

Guys, I was there when the TVA "cut the deal" with the museum. I don't know the specifics, but I am next-to-100%-certain that the TVA has plans for the other screw; over the years, that prop has been on the pier side of the boat, and sustained minor damage from occasional bumps into the bulwark. Against any more damage being sustained, as well as the severe electrolytic dissimilar metal corrosion that's taken place, the museum apparently decided to allow the TVA to "buy" the prop (ie: pay the costs necessary for the removal and restoration of the prop) and set it up on Pier 3 as part of a display.

Screw is off and will go to ship stores for safe keeping. |
It's gonna be weird looking down into that murky water of the Inner Harbor and not seeing that prop lurking there.

Truth be told I never attempted to look. I think it is a great idea making the prop a display dockside.

How old is that prop, and what sort of care has it undergone?
I guess I expected it to look a bit more worn out than it does. |
[QUOTE=razark;1614943]How old is that prop?QUOTE] I'm guessing it was installed sometime in the 1960's when the ship was last in service... :hmmm:

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net..._3613195_n.jpg I'm not sure if the prop is original from 1945 or had been replaced at sometime in her career. But yes, it is in good shape from the looks of it. |
There's an image on the SS-423 Facebook page that shows (faintly) an engraved line on the trailing edge of that prop that indicates: "Trailing Edge Modified 7-20-58" so we know it was there at least that long.
