The last one I heard of was Sir Richard Francis Burton.

He died in 1890.

Yes he did, and wrote a book about it. Of course he also discovered the source of the Nile, became the first white man to enter Mecca (disguised as an Arab and speaking the language fluently - along with about twenty others), and translated the Thousand Nights and a Night and the Kama Sutra into English.

Swordsman, adventurer, lover, troublemaker...no wonder that Jenkins guy stole his name!

This reminds me of one of my favorite scenes in IJ & The Last Crusade, where Indy and Henry have been captured and Indy's telling the bad guys that Marcus has the map and is already on his way to recover the Grail, that knows all the local customs, speaks all the languages, understands the culture, will blend in like a native, and they'll never find him...

...and then it cuts to Marcus wandering through some Turkish (?) marketplace, standing out like lost tourist, and asking random passersby if anyone there speaks English.

"I say, does anyone speak English? Or even ancient Greek?" (Latin?)

And Indy himself could do all those things. I'm a huge fan of the Young Indiana Jones TV series, and I love the tip of the hat to the series in the last one. Indy is talking to a local in Mexico. When he's done Mutt asks "What language was that?"
"It's a cross between Spanish and ancient Mayan."
"And you speak it?"
"Yeah. Picked it up when I rode with Pancho Villa."
"Bull****!"
"Well, you asked."
