Reportedly some time before the ship became locked "in irons" the officers had debated whether to remove the commanding officer in order to turn to a safer course, but the executive officer refused to do so as there had never been a mutiny on a US Navy ship. This was the inspiration for Herman Wouk's The Caine Mutiny. USS MONAGHAN DD-354:https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...aghanDD354.jpg12 battlestars/six survivors. USS SPENCE DD-512: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...8DD-512%29.jpg, 8 battlestars/24 survivors. All capsized by Typhoon Cobra on 10/18/1944. ADM Nimitz: "It was the greatest loss that we have taken in the Pacific without compensatory return (enemy vessels sunk in return) since the First Battle of Savo."
