What is the allure, that makes people wait on line overnite for this crap?

I pay 35$ a month. With no 2 year contract.

Is it some kind of social status thing?

I do not get it, and I am not an apple trasher, but I am not impressed. 600 for what my 200$ phone does faster. with no contract.

I hope no one here is as stupid as we were...I am warning you now, it is pure crap for the price paid.

I highly doubt that, everything I've read indicates the new iphone 5 is in fact faster than the current top of the line android, the Galaxy S3. When you say it does more, what exactly? What is your phone exactly? I agree with Mcbeck it's a question of integration, even for people like myself who don't have a Mac.

My Son has an iPhone4 and a MacBook pro. I have a small Android (Wildfire S) and a PC. Yes, i'm a PC. :D
I gave him 200 Euro for a Phone, the Rest were from relatives and by selling unused Birthday Gifts on ebay.
For my Android i payed 4,95 eur and 20 eur per month for the Contract. And it makes a good Job, mp3, Navigation, a short call for my workmates when im to late by traffic jam.
The iPhone is good and works too, but i can buy two good Androids for the Money. Apple is some kind of Relegion for young People here in Germany, but i'm an old Atheist. :|\\

As much I as I dislike Apple in general, Im sticking to my now rather old and beat up Iphone 3gs, for several reasons.

1) I recenly tried out a Samsung Galaxy fore a while, but after using IOS for two years, Android just seems like a bit of a mess TBH, layout is all over the place, too much preinstalled junk I didnt want, the appstore/ market place was annoying and buggy, oh and BLOODY ADVERTS EVERYWHERE!
Lastly W.O.T.A is coming to the iphone early next year, its worth hanging on to it just for that :D IOS is definatly a better choice for games anyway.

That said I'm kind of ashamed to have an iphone, proabably because I associate them with....er richard craniums I suppose! :haha:
For some reason when I see something everyone has got some, it somehow usually makes me want to rebel by not getting one.
Every time I see someone take picture with an Ipad It makes me cringe.

It is a status thing. There is nothing the android cannot do, and better :yep:

Apple gear is a status thing for some (rather superficial) people, yes.
But likewise boycotting Apple products because of the 'status thing' is also a a bit of status thing in its own right. :O:

Some People buy Iphones/Pads because they think its cool, in the fashionable/trendy sense of the word.
Some People Refuse to buy Iphones/Pads without even trying them out, because they like to think they are smarter than those who aspire to be cool.

Either way is being rather childish if you ask me. Who cares what everyone else is doing / thinking, screw that. just get the one YOU like. (finances permitting)

I will say this; they both do the same thing at the end of the day, so its kinda apples and oranges.
Android devices are clearly better value for money, (Apples stuff is always over priced.) So no argument there.
That said, I genuinly find IOS a much nicer OS to use over Android, for me, its easier, cleaner and seems a touch faster too.
And I will reiterate that for mobile games (if you are into them) - Apple wins hands down, because there are much more quality games avaliable on their store.

If I had tried Android and found to be just as pleasent to use, and it had the same range of games avaliable, i would have dumped the Iphone in the blink of an eye.
While Android is not at all bad, its minor annoyances were enough to put me off from trading in my trusty 3gs, thats all. I was tempted by the shiny new Samsung, my Iphone is covered in stratches and cracks, looks like its been in a warzone, but works fine :D
Perhaps Ive been spoiled.

This ^ before anything else. Or better: it is culture-building, in a social-psychological sense. Apple-salesman gets special training on language, phrases to use, words to avoid, and their training gets compared by specialists to the verbal manipulation that you see taking place in sects. Apple "presentations" also get "celebrated" for that reason in the way they are celebrated. A mental image of a new culture, a new community out there is being established that way, and it gets painted in colours so that people want to become a part of it.

It is the art of subliminal manipulation by advertisement at it's highest level.

And should therefore be banned and forbidden, imo.

Apple does it better than almost anybody else in the commercial world. But they are not the only ones. If you ever visit Wolfsburg and the Volkswagon "manufactury", you either get hooked by the way the car gets celebrated there in an almost religious fashion - the parallels to basic principles of a mass indeed are stunning, from a culture-anthrophological or psychological point of view, or you are disgusted by the way in which a profane material object and tool gets elevated into the status rank of a religious holy revelation. For me, it was the latter. No matter that many people in non-Western countries see us as materialistically deformed, soul-less monkeys. In a way, most of us are, some more than others.

Well said, plus I don't know, it seems to me some android users (especially the ones who post on some of the tech blogs) are as obnoxious as Mac users back in the day (you know before there was malware discovered for Mac). In addition to games , genuinely find Apple stuff better for music playback, I mean in organising my music library. Of course I've bought third party earbuds and stream from my computer at home to my hifi cause all of these players/phones come packed with crappy earphones. Messy as itunes is in some areas I have not seen a feature as powerful as smartplaylists to organise my mp3s.

This. Every 6 months or so, we have the phone conversation at work. All the fancy/ expensive phones come out and "look what my phone can do" and "oh, you have THAT phone [insert inferior phone here]:hmph:".

Then I pull out my $20 pay as you go phone:haha: (from the subsim meet:D:haha:).

nikimcbee 09-30-12 11:32 AM

I love the new samsung commercial, making fun of the people waiting in the queue:D to buy the iphone.:hmph:

ha, I found the commercial:

Note to self: send samsung advert bill for linking to their ad.

antikristuseke 09-30-12 11:35 AM

I usually upgrade every two years or so, but the iphone is way too expensive and the hardware is inferior to other handsets way bellow its price range, cont comment much on the software but since i can do anything i need on the android with all the comfort i expect there is no point to change that which is not broken.

They all suck. It's nothing but a darn electronic leash. You simply can get away from anything. The leash has become a prerequisite for most jobs. If I could flush my android powered HTC EVO I would.

Rant over.

IPhone seems to be a status thing. I don't understand the allure. I can say I hate android. The updates and ICS have created a Frankenstein. Just a jumbled mess of apps that work for 2.1 but not 2.2 and never will because your device can not update to 2.2 unless your carrier sends it to you. Planned obsolescence.

My wife had a Windows phone. I loved it. Simple, easy, apps worked at no charge. Open source...closed! Android is open with a mess of apps that are not always the greatest. I have android on my tablet. I hate it. I will be looking for a tablet with windows.

The iPod is hands down one kick butt music player. Nothing better IMO.

JU_88 09-30-12 08:10 PM

If i had the time, Id head down to the Apple store to walk up and down the Iphone 5 queue with my tounge stuck under my bottom lip making a long UNNGGHH! sound, because that is a pretty accurate description of what they are doing....queuing for days... to pay silly money.... for a phone...thats a little bit better than the one they currently have.

Or maybe i would just give them a clap, because that level of materialistic idiocy almost deserves a round of applause!

the_tyrant 09-30-12 08:37 PM

Ok, first of all, DON'T BUY PHONES ON CONTRACT!!!!!

In my use case, (and in many of yours I would believe), it ain't worth it.

Ok, disclaimer: fanboy rant ahead

For phones, you should go with either Symbian or Windows Phone.

If we ignore programs, Symbian is the best cellphone OS out of the box. If you are looking for a flagship device, I would recommend the Pureview 808. It has a stunning 41 megapixel camera(you read that right), NFC, USB on the go(aka, you can plug in your USB sticks to your phone), and an FM transmitter (aka, get your phone to create an FM radio channel, you can listen to music in your car this way). Symbian is the best phone platform, but to bad it is pretty much dying right now. Its a damned shame if you ask me, Symbian sold millions when it was crap, and now is dead when it finally got good.

On the other hand, Windows Phone is GREAT. It is 100% smooth, no lag, and the UI is amazing. Windows Phone is a smooth and delightful platform. I would seriously recommend that you give it a try when Windows Phone 8 comes out.

As for android, I have to say, I'm seriously not impressed. My dad has last year's flagship android, the Motorola Atrix. It has a duel core CPU, and 1gb ram. Yet it LAGS! In its out of the box state, it simply lags when you swipe and whatnot. My Windows Phone, and LG quantum, has much lower specs, yet it runs perfectly smooth. This is simply unacceptable!

Also, Android's update situation is ridiculous. My dad's atrix, is on 2.3, 2 versions behind. And now, with some apps(like chrome) demanding 4.0, his phone can not run many of them.

Android devices are good when they are new, but consider this: In Canada, our contracts are 3 years long, so now one year in, my dad has to live with an outdated, "ancient" (by android standards) phone for two more years.

PS: my recommendation for a phone: The Lumia 920.

Comes out next month, does EVERYTHING.

AVGWarhawk 09-30-12 08:57 PM

Tyrant echoes my thoughts. Of the three I have worked with Windows on a LG Quantum was the best.

Ok, what is your phone and who do you pay $35 a month to? I am due to swith carriers, what plan are you on?

Nothing against iphones here, they work and are dominant, so like the VHS and Blueray, I like to fall in line with a winner. But I would be open to droid phones if I was fairly sure one work suit me.

thanks
