1.4

Hey guys, new member, big history buff but not very computer oriented. I uninstalled all patches and SH4. Reinstalled SH4 from the cd and went to ubisoft to download the patch. Last night I was stalking a Kongo class BB and had a DD brush the conning tower(need to pay more attention to sonar). The DD put out lifeboats and I incurred no damage.
My Questions to the informed masses.
1. Wasn't the patch supposed to fix this.
2. Did I get a bad patch from Ubisoft?
3. How do I get rid of tunnel vision when going after a fleet unit????

Anyway any help would be appreciated. I have been following the site and threads for awhile and you guys are a hoot. Good hunting.

First off, welcome aboard! And on to business:

1. The patch was supposed to address this, but I have not yet been run over in 1.4, so I cannot speak to this. I'll have to test tonight. Is it possible the DD blew himself up with DCs?
2. I doubt it. If the game is running fine the patch file was probably good.
3. You have to make periodic periscope sweeps and check the map for contact lines to help keep track of the escorts.

Good luck and good hunting!

Then it allowed me to reinstall.

Patched, no problems.

Very happy to read this post. It makes me think I am finally heading in the right direction. I am willing to try your approach... and gald to see also that you have Vista32, as do I. Am I correct in assuming the free registry cleaner is risk-free, so to speak? I get sweaty palms and nervous twitches at even the though of personally/manually screwing around with the registry.

Also, when you say manually delete SH4 files, you mean just delete them, send them to the recycle bin and then away permanently, right? It's been my understanding never to do that to remove a program/application because you can leave troublesome remnants of stuff on the PC, specifically in the registry I suppose.

I guess I am looking for a reassuring, "Go Ahead, son...not to worry" encouragement.

For what it is worth, here's my story that I was about to post in one or more threads on the Forums, looking for help. Does it seem to describe your situation/experience as well...especially regarding the installation/uninstall/reinstallation problem?:

"I have a long excruciatingly detailed explanation of the mistakes I made, and involving several install/reinstall/patching cycles, but at this point maybe just the short version and the current situation will suffice:
Somehow, my SH4 and 'SH4 patched to 1.4' got all messed up. Initially I installed 1.4 without first disenabling the Mods. I learned from the forums that was wrong, so I started trying to do it right..without ever checking to see if 1.4 was actually working. I also simultaneously tried to change the install from C drive to D drive, then back to C drive where it is now. Two days later, the symptoms now are that when I start SH4 it does say it is v1.4 on the screen, it shows the intro logo and movie...it also gives me the main menu. I can set Options...and they do appear in the cfg files in the "Documents/SH4" folder. But, when I select a mission (a training one for simplicity)I see the loading screen working, but it then immediately locks up and goes black and I get a "SH4 has stopped" notice.

In a nutshell, it is a total mess...but it's gotten worse: When I now try to Uninstall SH4 thru Windows Control Panel, I get a screen which says "...cannot run setup.exe"
When I try to Uninstall or Re-install SH4 using the original DVD, I get a message saying that I need to Uninstall version 1.4 first before the DVD will install SH4 version 1.0. The DVD doesn't even offer me an option to "Uninstall" SH4 (whatever the version) It's a Catch22, to say the least.
Along the way I did a System Restore, but that didn't help.

I'm pretty sure that I may now have a badly corrupted Registry for Silent Hunter, which might explain the problem with Control Panel and Orig DVD failing to Uninstall SH4. I don't really want to go into the registry because it is so dangerous, but would do it if I only have to delete certain specifically identified silent hunter entries. In layman's terms, I basically think I need to somehow erase all evidence of SH4 on my PC, however that can be done, then start from scratch with the original DVD.

Any expert ideas/help will be greatly appreciated....

Thanks to the Devs for the 1.4 patch. Its been a long time comming, and from what I've heard here, worth the wait.

I've downloaded the patch, but I'm going to wait for awhile before I patch the sim, though, for two reasons:

1. I'm going to finish out the war for once. Its Oct. '44, so I will only do two or three more patrols to really sail through the war.

2. Two or three weeks to finish out the war will give the modders a chance to adjust their mods for compatability. I'm sure I'll miss Trigger Maru if I have to do without it. Thanx Ducimus. I also want to be sure that Tater's Campaign Layers will still work. Kudos for you, too. And to all the others that have done such wonderful work on this sim, Thanx!

Now, if only someone would get the spelling of Bourganville right, I'll be just happy, happy, joy, joy!

I"ll keep a weather eye on these forums for any helpful hints.

about the ramming DD,s i run the convoy mission in the sub school
and let the dds ram me
it damaged all my sistems
and the dd took no damage atleast gave no indications of taking damage
they usually used to damage themselves when they did that in 1.3
so something out there has been fixed

be sure you removed all files
sometimes when you uninstall you still have some left over files from addons
(atleast ive noticed that)
maybe making sure you delete those will give you a real clean install

Damage taken by hulls submarine is shown in the damage interface?
what is that supposed to do i havent noticed anything different
can somone point me to it

Gato anti-aircraft guns.

Well it's nice to see that fairing gone from the Gato class subs, now I can see to defend myself finally without the walls blocking my sight.

I've got a saved game and have 8 torpedo's left and the Yamato in my sights very close .. seven times I've hit it with 8 torpedo's and nothing happens, not even one propeller stops turning nor does it even begin to get lower in the water. Did they break something here, I mean 8 torpedo's should do more than this? I've sank the thing several times with 7, even one time with 6 .. I've tried every depth setting between 12 feet to 19 feet deep .. any clues?

I also notice that no matter what I do if I aim just in front of the Yamato my torpedo's hit from the center to the stern .. I've set them on slow speed, high speed .. still when I aim for the bow they hit way back ... I've noticed this running into the passenger liners as well .. anyone else???

The torpedo's trajectory can differ with a few meters from the trajectory computed by the TDC if the range is short and the bearing is a big number (>45). So, if you want a very accurate hit, position your self in such a way that the bearing is less than 20 degrees.

Snakeeyes 11-30-07 07:30 AM

This couldn't come at a better time for me. I've hit a bug in the campaign where the game pulls a CTD right at the same moment in time. No way around it.

I need to ask if we have to do a complete reinstall of the game and then patch it or can simple disengage all my mods with the mod-enabler, patch the game, and then start testing the mods one by one again?

Fincuan 11-30-07 08:35 AM

Disable all mods and run the "Compare game files to snapshot" in JSGME(you of course generated the snapshot after installing JSGME, right?). If it lists nothing but screenshots you're free to patch to 1.4. If any actual game files are listed, then I'm afraid reinstalling is the only secure option.

Snakeeyes 11-30-07 11:03 AM

Oi.

Do you think I should start a new campaign from scratch? I mean... if I am getting CTDs NOW before the patch it's safe to say that something in my code is corrupted right?

From official notes on the 1.4 patch:
Quote:

Note 1: The save games and replays that were made with older versions of Silent Hunter 4 will be incompatible with the new patch version.

Note 2: In Base autosaving are compatible between original version and Patch

Start the game from your last Base autosave. Hopefully, you won't have already borked the patch by starting from a different saved game.

Actually this is in a fresh new campaign with ver 1.4 .. I just saved before shooting and man I can't sink that thing no matter what I do .. I only had the 8 torpedo's left .. I got 6 good bow shots and hits on her, and 2 aft shots off and hits, and the Yamato never even slowed down a bit .. This has become a challenge.. I keep playing that save over and over, but nothing I do can stop her. I've since continued on with the original campaign, I've already completed that patrol even, but I still replay that save now trying to figure out how to sink her.

I find it odd that people say they've never run into the Yamato, I see her fairly often I feel .. not every patrol but it's not as uncommon as some make it out to be, actually I ran into another task force with 2 Yamato's and 2 carriers on the way home from that one patrol above I was talking about where I couldn't sink her, but was I out of torpedos .. my bad luck!

SUBSUNK Big Time !

Hello please advise me here
I used to run SH4 v1.3 without any problems. A couple of weeks ago I suffered a catastrophic crash unrelated to the game and had to carry out a factory reinstall on my 3 year old HP Pavilion 1723. Since then I have been reinstalling everything, incuding up to date drivers as you would expect.

I reinstalled SH4 followed by the latest patch 1.4. I first scented trouble when the intro appeared in psychodelic colours very different from the way it used to appear. Apart from this, the little potted history of the campaign to date - you know the one with the voice over and the charts, shuddered horribly.
The game otherwise loaded easily. However as soon as I approached action (ie one of my expertly aimed torpedoes about to blow the stern off a jap destroyer. Or an imminent bombing attack by a zero) the game crashed. Not an ordinary ctd but the 'blue screen of death' - a system memory dump.

I removed everything and reinstalled the game without patches - same result. The problem seems to be with my computer but can anyone tell me what is wrong...
I was always happy playing this game and I feel bereft...

Please experts, give me the benefit of your advice

@Doolittle81

When you uninstall SH4 via Add/Remove Programs it is actually running this command:

C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{0D005F09-A5F4-473B-A901-5735C6AF5628}\setup.exe -runfromtemp -l0x0009 -removeonly

On my machine the directory C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{0D005F09-A5F4-473B-A901-5735C6AF5628} has setup.exe, a setup.ini file that has the string "Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific" in it, and several other files. It also has a 1.04.000 subdirectory that has many of the same files.

The Uninstall option from the control panel may no longer point to where these files are on your machine. See if you can find them, then run setup.exe -runfromtemp -l0x00009 -removeonly from that directory.
