Read it and understand it, folks. But for the dedication of the Devs on this project, you would have Silent Hunter 4 (1.1) to play with. And you could mod that until hell freezes over and not have a playable game. We have SH4 1.3 because of people like elanaiba and maerean_m. That's why people like John and myself are often referred to as 'fanboys'. You bet your ass I'm a fan of these guys. For 11 months, they worked twice as hard as most of us ever will, in order to produce a video game that they are happy to put their names to. With SH4 1.3, they should be very proud. |

How can you possible have an oppinion on the person's work if you haven't read any of his work ? God it must be terrible to just do what people tell you to do, how is that working out for you ? Do you have any "free thought" ? Are you free, or is someone forcing you to write your posts ? The mind, quite truely, boggles :nope: |

maerean_m and elanaiba, you can count me as a fanboy as well. |
come on, you people!
in my opinion sh4 is a pretty fine piece of code, and however author of this Thread might be right in the economic aspect of accepting and buying products, I think that problem with enjoyment from playing sh4 comes from different direction. it's not that this game sucks because it's not finished or something like that, my feeling is that most players (sub sims fans) has grown in age, and have troubles with activating imagination during playing sessions. it seems to be natural. remember the time when we used to play silent service, or later, aces of the deep? there were this unrepeatable feelings of realism and atmosphere. was it because of realism?I don't think so. i mean that games were in some ways realistic-of course, but there is no comparision to sh3 or sh4- sh3 and sh4 are way better simulating that specific submarine "thing". what i'm saying is, try to think what would be your reaction if you have had sh3 or 4 these "silent service" days?would you complain that it's not finished, that there is no periscope animation and the crew is half transparent?
of course, crew IS half transparent, animated periscope?sure! but for me- most important is having incredible tension during night convoy attacs, sending torpedoes and hearing hits! then long evasion manouvers trying to escape escorts, and finaly satisfaction from tonage i've sent down. And that is it ! come on people! game is a game- it requires you to to use your imagination to fill up gaps and stuff. you'll never be a real wwII submarine commander,so you better relax a bit and don't become a "young american consumer" [no offence ;;)] if you lose your imagination, you will also lost your passion!watch out for that! |

Yes, I have read Chomski, and he's pretty worthless. More so than Howard Zinn which is pretty impressive, given Zinn's loathing of the system and country in which his second rate writing made him rich. Now this post is way/way O/T but the Chomski fanboys always say when someone criticizes him that "have you read him? If you don't love him then you have no understanding and you are the chickens in 1984." Well, I had this loser shoved down my throat by liberal Social Science professors when I was that horrible left-wing experiment called a state funded undergraduate program here in the states. Given Chomski's proclivity to hug on dictators, he's pretty worthless in my book. Anybody that prefers Che to Abe has horrible taste in political systems. I guess you want to defend his position on Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge? Have you sir, read anything written in the last twenty years by David Horowitz? Edmund Burke? Robert Service? Richard Posner? Milton Friedman? Fredrick Von Hayek? PS- Thanks El and the guys at UBI for giving us 1.3. This is a great game. |

* SD radar - was always a-scope, gave range but no bearing. How hard should that have been to simulate? * convoys/TFs still stop or crawl once you attack them. Perhaps they're as interested in the antics of the escorts as I am....I've counted 3 so far that have sunk themselves with DCs dropped while moving at about 2kts. The reduced speed is probably because they all run to the same spot then spend time moving back and forth like some pre-sumo bout choreography... * can't attack on the surface without being spotted. You CAN attack in ANY weather, at ANY time, submerged. We'll just ignore the fact that many attacks actually occurred by surfaced boats at night, and that USA subs couldn't use their scopes under many conditions... * submerged endurance for batteries seems dodgy, still. * sonar detects convoys when I'm running aorund on the surface at 12kts. * about 6-10 rounds from a 4" gun sinks a "huge European liner".... Believe me, I could come up with a list as long as you'd like as to what might be considered "wrong" post-1.3. Not wishing to rant, but to think that the sim is in any way finished is, from my knowledge of submarine warfare in WWII and from my perspective, just unjustified. I'd still rate it beta grade. Then again, I'd simply not work for a company that did what has been described in this thread.....(and yes I have resigned from companies in the past for reasons of their standards differing from mine to the point I was no longer prepared to work for them). |

No, wait... |
Like I said, I was "frigthened" by bugs reported at the release of the game, and waited until this patch. I though I could still spend my free time on SH3 and few other games until I would hear about a great patch.
In any case, I'm very glad that devs come here to talk with us. And I understand what was said here, about the situation with SH4 development. I work since 10 years in the IT domain. Enough time to see the visible face of the moon, but also its hidden face. And I share the same opinion than Uber Gruber about the way big companies work, and how they consider their devs. So, if I want to blame anything, I will not blame it on devs. It's nice to see that there is a community over here, sharing an interest as a hobby. But when it comes to money, let's face it: when we are on the customer side, we claim about customer rights. As workers/employees, we claim for rights again. But how many of us would invest big money in companies without claiming for as large benefits as possible? How many would invest just for the sake of progress of society, withoiut thinking about return on investment? I have bought shares in companies, and I now many people who do. Nobody want to loose money, nobody want to make neutral investments. All think about making good money in a short time: it's in almost all of us. As a consumer, I also want to blame companies delivering soime "average quality" (or less than) products to me. But I also know that when I personally invest something in companies, it's because I expect a good return, in a reasonable timeframe (you know, when you need it for your house, for a new car, for your childrens...). Just wanted to say all so because here, I'm amongst those who wish to tell Ubi representatives about some disappointemnts. But what Ubi does is what almost all commercial companies are doing. It's required by the market. I don't think it's a good thing, but I can't think about a better trade system than the one we live in, at this time. And now, I'm going to play some more SH4. Later! |
