For you folks near the water, here's a handy little storm surge predictor to help scare the bejezzus out of you.
Keep your powder dry. |
On the hype-News this morning if, it makes landfall on one of those States the "Outer Banks" Will be "GONE" when it passes thru. :o
My thoughts and only prayer I know will be with all you members and residents of all the States in it's path. Bless all of you and try to be safe FIREWALL Out :salute: |
Having ridden through Ike and aftermath, all I can say is: stay safe out there, and don't try anything stupid.

A raft would have been nice for getting things out of the house, actually. |
It is true that the media does hype up things over hurricanes (well over anything really) but still they are pretty destructive at least along coastal areas even weak Cat 1 ones can do lots of damage.Really nasty cat 4 or 5 canes only hit an area every 30 or 40 years and people tend to forget.
Katrina was so bad because it went across South Florida and weakened then it got into the hotter Gulf of Mexico and got much stronger and many residents of LA,Miss, and Al did not take the threat seriously partly to be blamed on the hype news and also to blame on the whole "cry wolf syndrome" after several years of warnings people tend to get lax.I think the last time the Gulf Coast had a really nasty storm pre 2005 was back in the mid 60's Katrina took out the I-10 bridges near Pensacola and that was on the weaker end same for New Orleans they did not get the strongest bit either and look what happened. The last really bad one to hit FL was Andrew almost 20 years ago now same for NC and SC the last really bad one was in the late 80s. I always feel better safe than sorry with a hurricane you dont have to go into panic mode though. |
New York Times put up a Tracking map for Irene.
http://www.nytimes.com/projects/hurr.../2011/Irene?hp I'm right on the edge of New Haven, CT practically on the right side of the blue track line. who knows, maybe this is god saying he's had enough of Jersey Shore. |
I do wonder how some areas up further north will handle it if it goes up that way down South they plan more for such events as they are much more common.

As for the Outer Banks...yes, good possibility it will be wiped clean. Nature is strong. Ocean City MD was created by a hurricane. Just as easily made it is easily erased. |

15. Hugs the Coast. :yep: Eastcoasters don't try to out guess Irene.
Go West to family or friends with your own Bedding and Eats and a few boxs of Important Papers and ireplaceables. Not the whole house. If no family or friends to bunk at keep, going West until your past the Gouging Motels. |

Very true if the last few years of storms have taught us anything it should be that we really should not develop some of these low lying areas very much as they naturally absorb the oceans wrath so will what you build there not mention that we take away the blocking effect that barrier lands create and then that means more trouble for areas inland water level wise. |
:hmmm:
Is it just me or is she weakening? Cat 2 now and forecast to hit shore as a Cat 1. :hmmm: Would be about right after all the panic from the government and then a gentle breeze washes ashore instead of a Cat 3 hurricane. Sods law, the only universal constant. |
