Hm, also not sure now. Maybe it was different back then. Check this out.

Officers with working uniforms (Khaki) no dolphins.

Officer with Dress Uniform...Dolphins

Maybe someone have different pics that shows officers in working uniforms with Dolphins?

CaptainCox 06-08-07 04:33 PM

Ok I found one pic actually. And its of none less then Duddley Morton
http://img359.imageshack.us/img359/8...kanesubaj2.jpg

But I wonder why Mr.Morton is wearing it and Richard O'Kane is not?

Another interesting thing with this photo is the heavy wethering on the boat...not that different to the stock textures.

The Submarine Warfare Insignia (usually known as "dolphins" or "fish") is a uniform breast pin worn by enlisted men and officers of the United States Navy to indicate that they are qualified in submarines. The Submarine Warfare insignia is considered one of the Navy's three major warfare pins along with the Surface Warfare Badge and the Naval Aviator Badge. To earn the right to wear the pin, American submarine sailors complete an extensive qualification process that lasts about one year which covers virtually all of the submarine's systems onboard.

It seems to me, based on this that the "Dolphins" need to be awarded. Although. if someone could limit its wear to only the Captain, this would look alright unless someone can figure out how to award it.

Not sure about that, based on some patrol logs I've read - for example, looking at the Batfish's first two patrol reports (starting December 1943) reveals the following:

Patrol 1:
This was the first patrol for this vessel and also the first for two officers and over half of the crew. ... Men fresh from submarine school found their places rapidly and are now well along in their training.
Patrol 2:
A summary of personnel status follows:

(a) Number of men on board during patrol: 72
(b) Number of men qualified at start of patrol: 49
(c) Number of men qualified at end of patrol: 69
(d) Number of unqualified men making their first patrol: 3
(e) Number of men advanced in rating: 0

Thus it would seem that for any given boat, except perhaps those early in the war that had probably had their crews for a while before the war started, there would probably be quite a few people who did not have their dolphins, at least for the first patrol or two - sounds pretty similar to the way they handled the badges in SH3 - I wonder why they changed it for SH4?

I think I already mentioned the time frame above to get the "Dolphins":

"To earn the right to wear the pin, American submarine sailors complete an extensive qualification process that lasts about one year."

So it is posible for many crewmen in this Sim to not have the pin.

Well, it's not really clear from the quote above whether that qualification process year would be spent in training before they're allowed on an actual boat on war patrol, but the patrol logs make it clear that indeed many crew did go on patrol before they had completed that process. End result is the same - there should be some crew on board without them, and it would be good if they could be awarded like the badges were in SH3.

Everyone serving on a sub is expected to become qualified within one year, thereby being awarded his dolphins. Thus, every crewmember (unless it is his first boat and has been onboard for only a short time) will have dolphins.

Believe me, Been there... done that.

http://subguru.com/nautilus/subqual.jpg

WW2 saw a huge influx of new submariners and thus the proportion of non-quals on any given boat was higher then than it is today. It would be good to be a mix of crewmembers (qualified & not) in SHIV, and to have some fraction of them become qualified each patrol. My main complaint is that noone seems to be qualified (i.e., wearing dolphins). In any case, the more senior crew (petty officers and LTJG/above) should have dolphins. If I had my choice, I'd rather see lots of dolphins on my crew than none at all :arrgh!:

So many mods, and so good, I'm spending more time keeping up with them than I am playing the game.
