If I may be allowed to offer some constructive criticism......... the Dutch ML-KNIL aircraft such as the Buffalo, Hurricane and Glenn Martin bombers did not have orange triangles (or, later, the national flag markings) on the upper wing surfaces. Not 100% sure about the MLD aircraft but I think they didn't have them either. Will check and let you know. As for camo colours, the KNIL planes had upper surfaces in two shades of green, the USAF's Vietnam era greens are a perfect match for those shades.
The "Admiralen" destroyer looks pretty much like mine:D:up:, though I use shielded guns for A and Y positions. Using the "K" class cruiser, with all its shortcomings, at least gives "Java" something that resembles the thick foremast- much better than "Dido" or "Omaha". Pity nobody has made "Emden" yet....... |
It needs a SH4 set of texture maps though, looks very flat compared to SH4 ships, that's for sure.

Re the ML Hurricanes: they were on loan from the RAF and thus retained their RAF serial numbers and camouflage, which was either the temperate Dark Green/Dark Earth or Desert scheme of Mid Stone/Dark Earth (both schemes being used on the Singapore/NEI theatre Hurricanes). Roundels on upper wing surfaces and fuselage sides and the fin flashes were painted out with one of the two ML shades of green; the roundels on lower wing surfaces were overpainted with ML light grey.
The ML and MLD switched from the orange triangle nationality marking to the national flag as of 23/2/1942 following several "friendly fire" incidents where the triangle was mistaken for the Japanese Hinomaru. |

The flag is placed wrong.
Look at my sig. |
The flag looks ok to me. The Java class cruiser in your sig is at anchor. When a ship is in port or at anchor, she flys her ensign from the flag staff on the stern, as your sig shows. When she is at sea the ensign is flown from the gaff staff usually located on the main mast. Not sure if the Dutch Navy practices this but just about every other navy does.
|
True, when getting underway in the US Navy as soon as the last lines slip the bollards the ships whistle blows and "Underway, shift colors" is passed over the 1MC and the flag at the stern flagstaff and the jack on the bow are taken down.
At the same time the flag is raised on the mast for the duration of the underway period, the process is reversed when pulling in "Moored, shift colors":yep: Time for liberty call!!! |
Great mod! Played the single mission.

just bringing this old thread back to life for a second because I think it's relevant...
I just spent 2 days in real time SH4 RFB 2.0 plus RSRD After having patrolled the makassar straits for two weeks, I was ordered to a new area on the other side of Borneo, fuel was getting low-ish so I refueled at Surabaya. The date was february 23rd, 1942 and after checking some of my books I thought: let's assume that HQ re-assigns me to the Java Sea temporarily, to scout for ABDA and to inform them of the incoming Jap invasion fleet. February 27th, Java Sea north-west of Surabaya At 1600 we had sonar contacts to our north and south, both appeared to be taskforces and both were heading our way. At 16:30 we spotted the masts of the Jap force coming from the north, we ran at flank speed away from them, to the south, to meet up with the ABDA Striking Force. (The plan was to screen the upcoming battle as it went on and then move in to attack the cruisers while the destroyers were otherwise engaged) shortly after 1700 the first guns opened fire and several hours of intense action followed. By 20:00 the Japs had lost all their destroyers and one light cruiser, ABDA was largely intact and running around all over the place, too fast for me to keep up (history is bunk) Then three Jap destroyers came out of nowhere and sank De Ruyter before being driven off again. bastards! We found the two Jap heavy cruisers later that night and attacked with torpedoes, but missed. they were too fast for us. During the night, while we sailed back to Surabaya with some heavy damage to the conning tower and most of the watchcrew dead (took one shell hit from a DD early on, to the conning tower). As we went home, scattered remnants of the ABDA strike force limped in and we were told that Java wasn't out base any more, and to end the patrol in Perth instead. I was stunned by being actually able to witness the battle. Being dutch it even made me slightly sentimental. Silly how a computer game can do that to you. two things I was wondering about: -All the Dutch flags on all vessels I saw so far are upside down. Should be red-white-blue but they are blue-white-red instead. It's either RFB2 or RSRD, I dunno which of the two. anyone know about that? -The heavy units spent hours firing their guns at each other, scoring hardly any hits at all. this is how the battle actually went and I was impressed by that fact, but why is it that they are somehow able to hit my tiny little submarine? Is it scripted? The salvos on the big ships went all over the place, yet I got straddled by dozens and dozens of shells, and hit once. On this playthrough. (I played the battle from a 14:00 hrs save a few times, just to see how it played out. Often i got hit by gunfire and had to reload) Again, I am assuming the battle is in my game due to the work that's discussed here, if i'm entirely in the wrong thread, please put me right. Thanks again for a thrilling experience, bosje |
With the release of SH5, it might be worthwhile to convert SH5's "Emden" for SH4. Quite apart from being useful as "Emden" for the Soviet "Battle for the Baltic" mod (as is "Schleswig-Holstein", more targets are always welcome! :D), "Emden" is a much better standin for "Java" and "Sumatra" until somebody makes a proper model for them.
