GWX should give us usable BDU messages in code, what we need to decipher with this.. lotta fun!

bigboywooly 05-13-07 04:12 PM

Well why dont you write some ?
Pick a couple of the real historical messages in GWX such as historic missions\base losses\ new bases etc

Easy to provide a message.txt in the mods folder for those that want to play the Enigma way

:hmm:

johan_d 05-13-07 04:21 PM

well maybe i do some, but on another occasion.. see the http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...=114147&page=2 thread what I have in mind for access...

Not getting a good message. The first two blocks =AZNM HXOU= are to get the proper key for the rest correct?

Correct.

Make sure you have the right mirrors and wire settings first. It is extremely important!! If not you'll never be able to decipher the message:
| 18 | B | Beta V I III | 01 05 05 19 | AQ BL CT DR FY GI HS JK NO UZ |

Then, set the four rotors to "AZNM" and type "HXOU". The resulting four letters will be your key. Completely reset your rotors (but keep the same mirrors and wire settings!), set them to the letters of your key, and begin deciphering from the beginning of your message. You should be getting your message clear and readable.

While it could be theorically possible, however to be as hardcore (or masochisticly) realistic as possible we would need a Kriegsmarine Enigma code book as settings changed everyday. And do you really want to take one to two hours for deciphering each message? And what about triple-coded messages for the Captain's eyes only? :know:

Most of the time, deciphering was an underling's job, the Captain receiving only the deciphered message at the end:

Once-coded : Radioman
Twice-coded : 2WO
Thrice-coded : Captain.

I think I did everything correctly, but didn't get any sense out of it either. What does the 18 number mean? Day number? Couldn't decypher Jenrick's message either, but then he didn't give the decypher keys.

It would have been cool to receive the messages in decyphered concise form though. You know, arranged in 4 character groups, rid of any punctuation marks. Numbers written out in text. Instead of the multi page 'letters' you receive now.

He did give you the keys. In fact he gave you everything you need to decipher his message. The "18", I figure, is just the day in which these settings should be used. Ignore it.

Enigma machines weren't meant to be used as plug-and-play. For each day, you had to use a specific setting from the code book. You have your two suites of four letters to get your key, but you need to set the interior of the Enigma as well to the right settings.

Remember that Kriegsmarine M4 Enigma machines have four rotors. So, you must set the following four Rotors in this order: Rotor Beta, Rotor V, Rotor I, and Rotor III.

The Reflector (Each is designated by a letter): B

Each of the rotors' Ring setting inside the machine: 01(A) 05(E) 05(E) 19(S)

Plugs : AQ BL CT DR FY GI HS JK NO UZ. Link A to Q, B to L, C to T, and so on.

Set these inside the machine, then you set AZNM on the rotors. Type HXOU, and you should get PDUF. Reset the rotors, put PUDF on the rotors, and type away.

Drakken 08-18-08 04:48 PM

Tested the key twice, resetting the key each time, and I must admit you are right. Something is wrong. I get exactly the same set of letters as you do...

Either it is double-code, or a mistake was made in the way the key was written. Alex3886 will need to confirm his key for us.

With Jenrick's message I meant the one with morse code dot-dashes added (#104). No key to be seen, unless it's the first 2 groups of the message. but that doesn't make recognisable sense either.

jenrick 08-18-08 05:14 PM

Okay glad it's not just me having trouble with the other message.

On the one I posted a long time ago in Morse, the first two are the initial rotor and the phrase. Should yield a key of: JFPZ

the message itself is: IUKH BBGA YLBK PQDI GJCZ ZTBR JFCU YRER QPUF LSNP AJWJ RBDV NYMU HEXB JPJD VOBV

the first block IUKH translates to HIAL

I'm sorry about that I must have made a little mistake.
This is the correct setup.
The 18 is the day, rotors are BETA V I III, ring setup is 01(A) 05(E) 05(E) 19(S).
And the plug connections are:AQ BL CT DR FY GI HS JK NO UZ.

I'm sorry again for that rookie mistake.
Your starting position is AZNM then you put in TSHW and it will result in the key witch is BDUX. Then you put BDUX as the starting position and start decoding the message.

Only read this when you finished decoding the message

Pleas do not read this until you have decoded the message, because if you will read this reply before, the message will lose its value.
