@ Oberon: always wanted a defender, but the maintainance would ruin me :wah:

Schroeder 05-12-12 08:05 AM

Oh damn...I think I totally misinterpreted those pictures. This is just the the thing to hold the roof and not the actual a-pillar.:damn:

OK, my mistake I think it would pass the test here then as well.
*I'll crawl back under my rock now...*

Thats what I found strange, why would someone be banned from the road due to a non-esential rusty part :DL

ajrimmer42 05-12-12 10:16 AM

haha, yeah it's just the roof bar thing that's rusted up, the dealer would only have known if he'd have taken the roof down. Since I posted them pics I cleaned it all up, cut off the worst of it and Hammerite'd it all :) Still looking for a replacement. Rest of it seems sound, just some slight surface rust under the arches and stuff but nothing to worry about.

On the subject of Defenders, they'd always be my first choice of 4x4 (with the exception of a UAZ-469 but they're rare as hen's teeth to buy) but I just couldn't afford one :( Jim, the guy I went greenlaning with has a '91 D90 which has been on axle stands for the last 2 years as the chassis has all rusted out lol

Jimbuna 05-12-12 01:20 PM

The car or the camera? :DL

Coil springs, nice. I remember helping my Dad to change his LRs springs from Leaf to Coil, one of the rubber washers holding the Leaf spring bolt in had become so perished that it had welded itself to the vehicle. Had to burn it out with a blowtorch in the end

I bet they were able to drive that back to base as well

Schroeder 05-12-12 04:57 PM

Ouch.:dead:

Sadly not, it went on a DROPS pallet and was displayed at the theatre reception point as a warning to theatre newcomers - our boss hastily visiting it to redact out unit's ID marks - eventually flown back to the UK and repaired but don't know if it came back to our unit.

Seatbelt and rollbar saved my life. Best bit was the Army doctor who eventually looked us over recommended going to the bar and having a couple of cans 'to ease any tension in the muscles'. :D
