I'm not very fit, but not really unhealthy, bad-looking or bad with basic menial work either - I just don't work out; I used to but I simply don't have a lot of time (old lie, I know) and even less motivation.

No reason I can't start again, but it'll probably take someone dragging me to the gym. When I worked out or did sports, it was always with friends; the truth of course is that I never really did it for the physical benefits but rather just socially :p

Same with drinking. I'm both a social drinker and a social athlete. Which means I don't do a lot of either!

Stress is the real big killer in my view.

Well some people can drink and smoke as much as they want, as long as they have a healthyish lifestyle and a good metabolism........ I shouldnt be using such big words

As for me, im one of those people who can eat as much as i want and not put on any weight.. I spend most of the day on my feet (exept for the odd hour in the evening playing SH) and i normaly spend about 2 1/2 hours a week with the weights ;)

No its not rubbish. Even the most valid of opinions must give way to science, and science has proved that obesity and heart failure go hand in hand. Your grandfather was probably an anomoly. Most others would probably have died a lot sooner than upper 80's. Genetic information has a heck of a lot to do with how you turn out. Also how resistant you are to things like cancer for example. Which is why you will get smokers who are still smoking a pack a day at 80 odd and not showing any signs of cancer, where the person down the street will be dead before they reach 60 thanks to their puffing away.

But you are right Stress is a major factor in the deterioration of ones health, also, extreme shocks has been known to bring on conditions of detriment to the body. Diabetes for example.

Pretty smart cookie you are, Penelope. Genetic make up does make some people predisposed to certain health issues. I agree 100% with Penelope's post.

Although I slacked off lately during exams, I try to go to the gym at least twice a week, doing weights, abs, etc. I run around the Alster (about 7k) once a week, and do push-ups and sit-ups at home whenever I feel like it (while waiting for SH3 to load is a good time).
