First coronavirus case confirmed in Germany

Quote:

According to the current assessment of experts, the novel lung disease appears to be mild in most cases, possibly even without symptoms. According to current knowledge, most of the deaths registered in China are due to older patients with severe previous illnesses.

The new pathogen is very similar to the virus behind the 2002/2003 Sars epidemic. At that time, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) between November 2002 and July 2003 there were only nine records in Germany. There were no deaths here.

^ First human-to-human infection outside Asia.

Reactions, and the authorities over here, are quite relaxed.

Warnings are given that surgical masks are neither needed, nor are meant to provide cover to those wearing them, they are meant to protect the others from the person wearing the mask.

The only real fear and risk is, that the virus mutates further.

JU_88 01-28-20 06:51 AM

Its not looking too good, But I expect it will end up on similar scale to SARS
There is nothing to gain from over or under estimating it at this point (on a personal level anyway)

Skybird 01-28-20 07:31 AM

If it does not mutate, it will be a so-la-la story that gets desperately milked by media to win more views. The common seasonal cold or the winter temperature is more a health concern and kills more people, tbh.

But it might be a good test run for authorities and hospitals for the day when a real dangerous virus pandemic starts to rage.

First point, indeed cry wolf enough times and people will laugh when it becomes far more deadly. This stupid milking of this story has gone on far to long.

Second point, no chance here in the UK our NHS can not cope with seasonal flu outbreaks. Come the day when we have a real nasty one the UK will be finished.

Question, has there been any deaths reported outside China? Not seen any news here if there is any.

Problem is, with China, they are most likely severely under reporting the numbers. You'll know it's a real problem if by Sunday there are 40,00 reported infected.

Good news there is the answer is 'No'

Peiris, an adviser on the World Health Organization’s coronavirus emergency committee, said it is reassuring that outside of China
the disease has not spread widely beyond the people who brought it from Wuhan.

Came home a few hours ago after work, turn on my tv and can see there's a breaking news

The headlines

"Danish citizen is examined for possible corona infection.

The patient has been isolated

Hopefully it's false alarm, as it was with two Swedish citizens some days back.

Edit
As I hoped, it was false alarm
End of Edit

:k_confused:GOOD NEWS: IT IS A FAIRLY STABLE NON-MUTATING VIRUS AND UNLIKE ITS PREDESSESSER, SARS, WHICH KILLED 10% (745 DEATHS W0RLDWIDE)THIS ONE IS ONLY KILLING 3%...:arrgh!: NOW IF ALL THE AMERICANS FLEEEING WUHAN WOULD JUST STAY PUT INSTEAD OF COMING TO SAN FRANCISCO, I'D FEEL BETTER....note: THAT PLAN HAS NOW BEEN DIVERTED TO ANCHORAGE ALASKA

She added that all travelers would be screened for symptoms before departing. During a refueling stop in Anchorage, passengers will disembark into a terminal closed to the general public and receive another health screening before continuing on to California, said Anne Zink, Alaska’s chief medical officer.
Medics will be on the flight, Dr. Zink said. If a passenger shows symptoms between Wuhan and Anchorage, health officials will determine what to do on a case-by-case basis, she said, adding that Anchorage hospitals were prepared to treat any ill passengers.
Representatives for the California state Department of Public Health didn’t respond to requests for comment about the state’s plans for the plane’s arrival.

ISOLATED CERTAINLY SOUNDS BETTER TO ME; SO WHO IN WASHINTON D.C. IS DETERMINING THAT BRINGING THEM HERE IS A BETTER PLAN.....:hmmm:

They are all claiming diplomatic "immunity".

All those measures that Aktungbby's article talks about are being taken for a virus that can be passed on from one person to the next person by people that don't even show the symptoms yet, duh! :o

The Wuhan area is in a lockdown situation for over 50 million people ... California is only 38 million people :o

Keep an eye on "superspreader" in the news, i.e. 1 patient has infected around 14 hospital staff. If this was just being in the room with him while taking precautions that's scary... it'll go global in weeks.

A world-renowned scientist in Hong Kong has warned that the deadly Wuhan coronavirus could infect as many as 150,000 people per day in one of China’s largest metropolitan areas – Chongqing.

Now in an effort to quell the chances of mass panic and riot comes news of hope for a vaccine.
