Are the mast heights in the "Ship Recognition Manual" correct?

propbeanie 06-17-19 06:52 PM

Here's a rough outline of what is on a RecMan page, above the picture:

Code:

Name                        Class                                [3/4 View] - [Close]
Tonnage                Speed                Draft                Height                [Send to TDC]

When you see a mod use "Length", they will usually change that RecMan page to display the "Length" text in place of the "Speed", and then put the Length figure into the the Speed line of the cfg file of the ship, such that "Speed=35" becomes "Speed=94" in the cfg file, which then looks like "Length: 94" in the RecMan instead of "Speed: 35"... There is a ~LOT~ of work involved in that.

UBoat Missions - Friendly Task Groups

I believe that the FOTRSU team is NOT looking at the UBoat side of SH4, so this is more of an observation than an issue to be addressed.

I finished my last career in the USS Gudgeon, finally making it to the very abrupt end of the war - too bad they didn't give us a chance to return to port. It would make for a more graceful ending of that last patrol.

So to fill the time until the next FOTRSU release I started a UBoat career out of Surabaya. After completing the cargo drop at Bangkok I headed out into the Indian Ocean for a few weeks. On my return leg I ran into more IJN Task Groups than I could count! There must be 20 or 30 or more out there running around the eastern Indian Ocean between Malaya, the Maldives, and Columbo. It can take forever to get back to port when encountering all those TFs through radar emission detections. Among them they number more warships than Japan could have built in several centuries!

The mod team (esp. Propbeanie) learned to avoid that in FOTRSU. Too bad the same can't be said for the Ubisoft team. Sigh.

No Action Requested. I Just felt like bellyaching. :salute:

I hear ya man... That is a mostly-stock campaign over there, with the only edits made in order to comply with ship Type= changes in the FotRSU mod. There are certain spawns there at Surabaya, where there will be a whale factory ship at one of the docks, merged into the dock, and sometimes into another freighter ahead, sort of like what was seen at Truk by Immelmann the other day. If I can get my programming skills back up to speed (this has been a tough sell thus far), I'll make me little utility for dialing back spawn percentages in those files. Or - if I maybe get a few weeks, I'll get back into the CMN mod, and we'll put those campaign files in the FotRSU German side... but that will be a while. :salute:

Tnx again...prints up nicely onto 5 pages of treasure.

Excellent! Glad you like it... Now, I do not know how accurate those lengths are, and @ Michael Wood, the same holds for the Mast Height figures. Whatever is in the game, is what those are. As we've discussed previously, it's what RR likes to call "the fog of war", where the data for the real Recognition Manual was obtained on a given date, let's say July of 1936. To begin with, was the data from then accurate? Second of all, what alterations have been made to the vessel in the interim? Now you're in 1944, using 1936 data. Most of the nations of the world constantly changed the looks of their ships in an attempt to make accurate targeting more difficult. The manuals can't keep up with the change in data, and the game itself definitely can't... - But this is where a mod like OTC can shine, bringing that accuracy to bear for us dum-dums who have issues with manual targetting... I can't even hit docked ships half the time when in manual - which is why you see me use auto while "testing" usually... :har: If I don't have OTC (I know, I know, trig is ~easy~ to comprehend - but I don't even get general math, much less algebra), I have to do a 90 at 1k to up my chances... - I would have made an awful bad sub skipper (and an even worse English Language instructor) :salute:

Can't count on periscope observations, eh? Good reason to use active radar or active if no escorts presents for determining speed. Thanks.

propbeanie 06-19-19 11:15 AM

You can count on periscope observations - seeing is believing - but you cannot 100% rely upon the data in your Recognition Manual. Even if we attempted to make it 100% "accurate", we might miss a few ~and~ who knows what "standard" the 3D model of the ship is "drawn" to? Is it actually a 98 meter in length ship when displayed in the game? Besides, which "length" are they using - waterline, overall, deck, etc? That's all I'm saying. If you combine your periscope observation with a sonar ping (possibly a dangerous thing to do - supposedly), or a radar sweep, you should have reasonably accurate distance information. :salute:

I've just tried to download FOTRSU v0.81 and got an error 404 is there a problem with it at the moment?

Confirmed. 0.81 is not available at the moment. I think a new version is going to be released very soon and the old version has to be removed first before the new version can be uploaded. Space limitations you know. So stand by. :D

Subsim has only limited room for uploads. I keep the present and the last versions available. With the release of v0.92, 0.81 was voted off the island. There's just not enough room in the Subsim download area to keep three separate 1.4 GB mods simultaneously.

I have found one of the references that I remember reading of, concerning a US sub being attacked by an IJN DD with torpedoes. In "Silent Victory" by Clay Blair Jr on Page 310 in my paperback version, near the bottom of the page is this:
A few nights later, he made a night surface approach on a convoy of two destroyers and three tankers. Before he could get off a shot, one of the destroyers sighted Gudgeon and charged, firing a torpedo. Stovall went deep.

The attack originated with Stovall's deck watch spotting a DD about 2145 while on the surface, and turned to approach it for attack, and while approaching, found another DD and an unidentified merchant, which they then turned to attack. The composition of the rest of the convoy was unknown at the time:
2156 First destroyer was observed to change course abruptly and head directly for us, range 3000-4000 yards. Made quick dive to avoid and rigged for depth charge attack. Changed course right to 130T. Went deep.
... which is a quote from his patrol report for the evening of 24 July, 1942. He makes no immediate mention of a countering torpedo attack, but further on he states:
Chief Torpedoman reported that he, and other personnel in torpedo room, heard what sounded like the high speed screws of a torpedo pass above torpedo room, as we passed 150 feet going down on this dive.
Of note is that the sonarman did not generate a warning - the torpedo room personnel heard it as it passed overhead. Neither the conning tower nor the control room personnel heard them - though there was probably a good bit of discussion "noise" going on with orders and acknowledgements, as they're diving for avoidance while rigging for depth charge attack.

I'm reasonably sure I read another report about one, but I might be remembering one of those WW2 sub movies... :salute:

The download page seems doesn´t work.....I want to download the mod, for a check with my previous, but I can´t do it.

Best regards.
