About to buy SH5,wise move?

Hi all,I'm new here and have enjoyed the Silent Hunter series up until now,and I was pretty intent on purchasing SH5,however after reading all the reviews and moans and groans about the sim I'm not so sure.

Firstly am I waisting my money?,and secondly now it's been released a few months are there patches that sufficiently correct the majority of the faults?

Sorry to ask these questions as I'm sure they have been asked before but I just want a clear picture of the situation.

From a raw load of the sim what patches and mods should I apply,I read old Darkwraths UI mod is pretty good.

Thanks all,I appreciate any help that you can give me.

Hello!
I've found out that disabling the storing of save games 'online' doesn't work. I tried to disable it in launcher, even manually by setting "SaveOnline=false" in launcher's .ini file but save games are still synchronized...

Ubisoft is implementing a weird way to synch the games (causing occasional loss of data): the Ubisoft launcher downloads the save games from the servers to a temporary location on your hard-drive. SH5 then synchronizes its save games with that location. By disabling the synchronization, the launcher does not download the save games anymore, but SH5 still synchronizes the saves with the location on your hard disk.

Conclusion: just ignore the sync-message in SH5. ;)

Stefan.

Basically DartkWraith's UI mod saves the game. Combined with some other graphical ones and some AI tweaks and sinking tweaks the game is fully playable, even without patches. :) All the moaning and complaining is coming from people that don't even own the game you'll notice, or that have specific single issues they are blowing out of proportion.

Get the game, get some mods and enjoy!

Hello all,
can anyone tell me why the multiplayer/online tab is grayed?

There sure is!

It's lowered by default by TheDarkWraith's NewUI + TDC as well. Kinda sad the devs couldn't add that single line of code (heck, single command) to the 1.2 patch in order to fix that annoying bug...

Awesome, thanks!

Wonderful and well supported come back. Nicely done! Really helps move the dialog along and present potential customers with a good base of information. Of course you're not a Silent Hunter 5 owner, and yet you're here making snarky remarks about how bad the game is, merely proving my point. Thanks!

I have SH5, it's got many issues (see the laundry list on other posts: make sure your cache buffer is rather large before loading the post: :)).

Having said that TheDarkWraith and other peoples mods really saved the game for me. I have a wonderful time working and playing with the mods. The game itself I am bored out of my skull with. It seems like shooting fish in a barrel now.

But the reason for my post is to mention: I have not tried crack cocaine. But I will frequently talk about how bad it is. You do not have to have something that is proven horrid... to yourself say it is horrid.

I agree that the games is playable with mods.. Yes TheDarkWraith's UI mod is a must have.

The game still has many bugs and faults.

But if the modders continue making great mods and if the game gets more patches (fingers crossed) because the modders can't fix (work around) all the hard coded bugs. Then this game could be better than previous SH games.

I hope that it will. :salute:

Speaking of arcade style....

Since we're all running around our subs in FPS style... why not let us crouch too? Get a new angle of things when you want to look under desks, etc. :)

After 1.2 patch i noticed that:

http://i44.tinypic.com/f21v0w.jpg

As you can see,at the same speed, control room RPM dial and Engine RPM dial have different values....
Is there a mod for this? Or it's just another new bug?
PS: i tryed to use the working dials mod and don't fix that.

Still have issues maintaining depth past 100m, just drop like a brick till i explode or blow ballast.

AI deffinately needs some work, though i've seen our modders on that issue already... spent 8 hrs in scapa flow with only 1 dd taking any interest in me, and all he did was sit stationary pinging me as i went past.... i repaid his kindness by sinking the Hms Barnham and Hms Rodney :haha: (this is according to the map note for scapa flow). Also attacked a task force that chased me from scapa flow towards the western approach, sank another unidentified Queen Elizabeth Battleship and a Kent Cruiser, at first the destroyer escorts were vigilent trying to find me, but at 50 meters and pinging me constantly they still could not see me, and gave up the hunt after about 10 minutes.

More documentation would be nice as I finally found the return to course button, and that was completely on accident, though happy that i now know where it is. Makes me wonder just what other features they've added with out letting anyone know they're there.
