And also, I don't know about a patch 1.4. When I install SH4, I install the base game (SH4), and then I install UBMs(1.5) and that's all I do. |

The UBM is v1.5 of SH4. It is not necessary to install the 1.4 patch either. The UBM has all you need. :D  |
Silent Hunter 4 Gold Edition DLC from Ubisoft, currently $10US.
Silent Hunter 4 Gold Edition DLC from Amazon, currently $20US, but does go "on sale", almost every time it does on Steam. Steam Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific v1.3 ANDSteam Silent Hunter UBoat Missions add-on Both are currently $10 US, or you can purchase a Silent Hunter bundle with SH3, 4, Uboats & SH5 for $40 US. All of them go "on sale" rather frequently for various prices ranging from $3US to $5US. Steam is frustrating in that their v1.3 cannot be updated with the Ubisoft v1.4 patch. You also have to be careful the way you mod their game. You can make copies just like you can with a disk or most other DLC versions, but you have to create a short-cut and start it through the Steam library. The Amazon link has a SubSim attachment, and it is really surprising that the Ubisoft store is still the least expensive, though they have been known to sell the v1.3 "by accident"... In all cases, do not install the game under the "C:\Program Files (x86)" folder. It is a persnickety, old game, but a lot of fun - especially for us older, slower fellows... :salute: |
Gun Placement Anomaly
After refusing a Desk job on 2/16/43 and retaining command of USS Salmon (at some cost to renown) I went back on patrol duty. Received a conning tower refit on 4/23/43 to add a 2nd AA gun - deck gun unchanged at 3.5" Stern mount.
On 5/26/43 took command of USS Sealion (Sargo Class) which has only one AA gun, but offers an upgraded Deck gun to 4.5". The problem is the new gun is a BOW mount only, whereas the 3.5" Deck gun is a STERN mount. Continuing patrol endings also only offer the bow mounted 4.5" gun. I did not take that upgrade because of possible placement issues. Given that someone is looking into deck gun placements I thought it worthy to point this one out. I'd rather not tempt the Sea Gods by taking the upgrade for fear of losing crew slots, etc. Just one more thing on your Job Jar list, guys. Thanks! |

I've been looking at this problem and have come to the conclusion that the issue of lost crew slots is directly tied to "changing" from a starting DG position (either bow or stern), then accepting an offer for changing the position to the opposite side. This issue has been with us from the Stock game, and I've got a solution for the next release. The following will be included in the next release as "Submarine Equipment Upgrades": ========= ========= A player will be given the opportunity to upgrade when in-port. Upgrades are offered for the Radar's, and AA Guns. The upgrades will follow the above rule of specific subs having permanent placements of their DG. They will be able to change the "type" of DG at the designated dates, but not their position. I've also looked at the S-Class, Porpoise and Narwhal Active and Passive Sonar capabilities and have these three subs requiring submersion for any contacts to be detected. The Porpoise and Narwhal will receive an automatic upgrade Sept 1, 1942, to "Hull Mounted" Active and Passive Sonar. The S-Class will require submersion for the duration of the war for all Sonar detection. |

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/414148025 Maybe a second CTD report will help in the diagnosis. I don't rule out any cause, at this point, including causes outside of the game (read Windows 10). However my CTDs do show a seeming commonality, being in contact with the enemy. Perhaps even a second similarity. Maps. The first CTD that I reported with a single merchant contact happened when I had the navigation map displayed and under time compression. The second CTD happened in contact with an enemy Task Force while I had the attack map displayed (no time compression). Gar boat. USS Grampus. 5th patrol of career. 2nd patrol in this boat after an upgrade from a Tambor and 1st patrol out of Brisbane after a transfer from Fremantle. November 30th, 1943 18:00 hours. Position is at about 1 degree north and at the center of the mouth of the northern Makassar Strait where it opens up into the southern Celebes Sea. Radar contact with an enemy task force about about 15 nm north of my position. Steaming SW at 18 knots. Seas heavy with wind at 15 ms. Task force made up of 4 destroyers, 1 light cruiser, and 3 merchants. As the contact progressed the task force must have detected my radar because they went to zig zagging. I shut off my radar and soon they seemed to line up again on a new course almost due south. I had to change my course to intercept their new track and fell short of a good shot at any of the merchants. I fired 5 mk14s at two different merchants and all 5 missed. I then managed to use a cutie to sink the first destroyer to show up looking for me. It was as I was lining up a cutie shot on the second destroyer to arrive near my position that the CTD happened. Both CTDs were with an enemy airbase not far away. I am thinking that enemy aircraft loading in and somehow causing the crash is a possibility. Please ignore my moans of agony after the crash to desktop. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/414067830 Of note, but likely unrelated to the CTD. This career has progressed nicely for me with a boat upgrade, promotion, awards, and crew gaining much renown. Also on the 4th patrol I looked at the crew and all 3 lead engine room crew from each watch had gained the green propeller fast dive ability. :Kaleun_Applaud: Unknown if related to the CTD, but creepy none the less. For the last few patrols I have had a majority of my crew show up on deck as the same red headed character. Their numbers seem to be growing as time goes by. Yes they stayed that way after transfer to Brisbane from Fremantle. I should use JSGME to uninstall FOTRSU and do an original file snapshot comparison? :salute: |
I concur, an Ada Maru... Now, they were not zigging at all though, correct? Had you sunk a ship in the area earlier? I ask, because in theory (theory), the planes don't spawn without having a reason, though there are "patrols" supposedly. The one when you are targeting the DD, that would make sense that you might have an airplane coming...
What I'm going to do is build an IJN airplane line-up mission - have I done this before (deja vu)? Anyway, if that doesn't work, then I'll put a couple of sampans off the coast by an airplane base, and see if I can get a CTD that way. Thanks for the vidz Immelmann, very helpful! :salute: |

Tonight I loaded a previous save and streamed the Task Force encounter again. CTD again. This time while a destroyer had just started dropping depth charges in my vicinity (no damage). Of note. This time around the Task Force spawned differently. Instead of 3 merchants there were only 2. A carrier was running in place of one of the merchants and a battleship appeared trailing behind the group (but apparently part of it?). In this CTD I had not used time compression at all after the initial contact report. I'm scratching my head here because I seem to be the only one talking about having a crash to desktop problem at this time. Maybe I am the only one who is having these right now? Could it have something to do with the fact that I have almost memorized the keyboard commands and I am increasingly using them instead of mouse clicking buttons on the screen? I know a lot of the key bindings have been reworked and wonder if my heavy reliance on keyboard commands lately has caused me to uncover something that nobody else is experiencing because I am doing things differently than most? I still like the airplane theory though. Air cover was withering leading up to contact with the Task Force. :salute: |

Could be something to do with later war missions or ships one might encounter in a Central Pacific campaign. Or, not. |
About the only thing it could be Immelmann is an airplane, but not an RGG spawn, but rather an airbase spawn. I have not stayed on the surface with my radar on to have the airplanes DF me yet, and it'll be Tuesday before I get to test that anyway. Doing a Single Mission with the "plane parade" did not cause an issue. I had the planes over-fly my location, and they all certainly like to attack, that is for sure. I am probably going to have to do a group of missions like that though, because there are just too many planes to dodge and count and not get sunk by... which happened too often... There might be an issue with the particular airfield used for "Manokwari_NOR_AirBase" on northern New Guinea (NormalAirBaseJP) and its AirGroup configuration for 1943. "Dates" may loom large here. Then again, maybe not... :salute:

I had a couple of CTD's during one patrol in the Sargo class boat in late 1943. After the third reload of a Save file i was able to make it back to port. The CTD's occurred when I was within 25Nm NW of Rabaul, in the Bismark Sea. After racking up several merchies, I encountered an IJN TF and got lucky, sinking a light or escort carrier and a Takao CA. While making my escape from the pursuing DD's I upped the TC to help kill the suspense.
As soon as it got to 512x it crashed. Both times. On the third load of the same save game, I let it run at 32x until I was well clear of Rabaul. As a test, I then ran at 4096x TC all the way back to Brisbane with no problem. There were constant air raids over Rabaul, numerous air patrols, and a fairly large save file because of my mission successes. I've learned to never use excessive TC when within 25 Nm of ANY port, especially if there is air activity or a large number of ships in the port. Propbeanie spoke to this a long time ago, something about multiple spawns, lots of planes, etc. The problem at that time was excessive stuttering at any TC above 256x-512x or so, not so much CTD's. I had forgotten. From now on I will draw a 25Nm diameter circle around any enemy port and avoid using TC when within that circle. |

yes, you have to be careful when you are hunting in close proximity to a major base/port. in the past, i was chasing down an IJN TF near Saipan and it spawned right in Saipan harbor. THAT caused a carrier to come to rest on a mountain top on Saipan. i posted the screen shot. it was pretty funny when you think about it. BUT....humor aside, this is not something that you really want to happen, so unless you are on a photo/insertion mission, steer clear of major bases/ports and try to avoid contact with major enemy groups when you are within 25 nm of land. good luck! :salute: |
