I was positively underwhelmed by the speech and doubt there was much if anything at all in it that surprised anyone.

Theresa May is due to hold talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel as she seeks to make progress on negotiating Brexit.

The PM will travel to Berlin for the meeting at the Chancellery.

It comes a day ahead of a speech on Saturday in which she is expected to set out the "security partnership" she wants to maintain with the EU.

I wonder if during the course of this meeting May will take the opportunity to say "Well, now you know what it feels like" :)

Will it be the end of old bed banger Henry as he faces a vote of no confidence at UKIP's EGM this weekend. :hmmm:

Bookies say...YES.

Even those within the party now think the party is over. :ping:

Jimbuna 02-17-18 09:14 AM

Meanwhile, no change in the machinations of the 'unelectables'.

A row has broken out at Labour's National Policy Forum (NPF) gathering after a vote to elect a new chair was cancelled.

The winner of the election, expected to have been Ann Black, would have joined the eight-strong group of "(core) officers" within Labour's National Executive Committee (NEC), which is considered to have six pro-Corbyn members.

Despite being a left-winger, Ann Black does not enjoy the support of the pro-Corbyn Momentum group.

There are claims pro-Corbyn members stopped the vote as part of wider efforts to control Labour's NEC.

The official line is that insufficient notice had been given for the vote - but those angered by the decision say the rulebook doesn't specify how much there should be.

Jeremy Corbyn's office says it should be seven days, and rejects any suggestion that this is about anything other than due process taking place.

A spokesman stressed it would be wrong to suggest that the vote was blocked to prevent anyone obtaining a position amongst the NEC officers.

The European Parliament's Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt says that talks are dependent on the red lines already set by the UK government.

Mr Verhofstadt told the BBC's Andrew Marr programme that single market membership would be the "best solution" for British industry.

The gross amount payed to the EU by the UK is the equivalent to the entire sum of payments by the thirteen member states that joined the EU since 2004, that's all of Central Eastern Europe, Malta, Cyprus and so on.

Countries such as Sweden and Denmark have already stated they won't pay a single cent more after the UK leaves and Germany and France are reluctant to fill the estimated £10 Billion per year black hole so isn't it time meaningful and fully transparent negotiations were entered ito instead of this 'tit for tat' we are currently witness to from both sides.

I've said it before and I'll say it again....the final option is always to simply walk away and if common sense is to prevail, we all know such a move will cause much damage to both sides and is actually very avoidable.

The Treasury has moved to play down expectations of Chancellor Philip Hammond's Spring statement next month.

The statement will have "no red box, no official document, no spending increases, no tax changes" and will last 15-20 minutes, a spokesman said.
