Thanks for that. Not a huge Save file then. How many patrols do you have, and do you remember the date you were assigned the Balao, and the date of your sailing from Mare / San Francisco? :salute:

Actually (V080 RC2 + Patch 5) they are blind and deaf.
No need to be on silent running, nor low speed submerged close to them...that’s way too easy (and boring)

For test, i picked up the sim file of TMO 2.5 and activated it on top of FOTRSU.
Was expecting « uber » destroyers like in TMO, but to my surprise, they remained same noob :o
So obviously there are others files to tweak to obtain same TMO results...
It was in the convoy attack training mission (hard)

On side note, i’m Not fan of « uber » destroyers, something more intermediate.

What is a bit surprising is the varied escort behavior. I have run across a few that seem "timid" in their prosecution of the war, but for the most part, they've done a relatively good job of chasing me down. My only issue with them was that they did not shoot at my scope being up very often. The AI was tweaked again for the next release, and they are definitely more agressive. My scope was again hit by gun fire from a CV DD combo while attacking. Shot #6 through a cracked lense - it missed. In fact, I've had them find me from 10000 yards away, while I was set at 1 knot speed, on Silent Running and below the thermal by 50-60 ft. Of course, I was going after their CV, so probably extra attentive, but while facing the lead escort, it went out of its way to drop boom-boom right on me, and at the correct depth. Thankfully, I was right between the throwers' and the dropper's cans, and only took minimal damage. He did leave me alone long enough to get my attack in. They did put the hurt on me after I damaged the CV though. I'm still trying to get out of there... :salute:

Seems you have fun with them...no joy for me. They just ignore me, excepting dropping DC on the place where i started to launch my torpedoes...

Have to say it’s at the beginning of career, so maybe they will evolve in skill?

I have sunk a carrier and an heavy cruiser without any problems, even periscope depth without silent running! :hmmm:

6 Patrols
Assigned Balao 10/27/42
Left Mare Island 12/05/42 for the 7th patrol.

I had no issues until I tried to enter Pearl to dock. That is when it crashed maybe best guess was 15 to 25 miles away.

odd AI gunner behavior

this is a very odd story. i am not sure that any action needs to be taken at this time but i want to tell the story just in case someone else experiences it.
october 1945 on patrol south of area 7. gato class boat. 20-some patrols successfully completed. in the past, there have been several successful deck gun attacks on merchies using the sub-AI to automatically fire the deck gun at the enemy.
i attack a small convoy. sink one DD. damage another DD. i decide to escape and try to hit the merchies from a different attack. when i surface i am actually only 7000 or 8000 yds away from the surviving DD. man the deck guns and give the order to auto-fire which begins and then stops. after a few seconds firing begins and then stops. i go to external view to watch the gun crew actions. the DD is dead astern. they fire a few rounds then train the gun to approx 300-310 degrees. then retrain the gun to 180 and fire again. so, i go to the bridge and use the TBT to see if there is a target at 300-310 degrees. Nope. Nothing. i go to the radar screen. only the DD astern. i go to the Nav screen. nothing but the DD. so, why was the gun crew retraining the weapon to 300-310 degrees and then going back to 180 to fire at the DD? and No they never fired when the weapon was at 300-310. really odd behavior.:timeout::timeout::timeout::timeout::time out:

i am playing RC2 with Patch#5 (i think). i can't get a JSGME config because i am using a different system to post because i am still in the middle of the mission.

Did you assign the target to the crew? How much of your crew is now CPO, and thinking that their twin should do all the work for them?... :salute:

@ merc4ulfate, thanks for the details. :salute:

Yes.
No chiefs in the gun crew.

Update. Left Mare this time and went to Pearl and docked. No problem. Left for a mission came back to refuel at Midway before heading to Pearl ...

crashed to desktop at Midway.

I'm never getting out of 1942.

Wasn't there a movie by that name? Had some cute chick in it?... - sorry, got distracted there... Anyway, what was you mission assignment when you left Mare? Was it the same when you left Pearl? If not, what was your assignment? Were you still leaving Mare on December 5th, 1942? What was the date when you went to leave Pearl? What were the circumstances surrounding the CTD at Midway? Did you get the normal "Do you wish to re-fit / refuel at Midway" message, and when you hit the "Yes" button, it crashed? Or did it do it before you got to there? Thanks. :salute:

Edit: I may have found the problem merc. You have the boat in December 1942, and we've got the missions for the shake-down and testing missions set OK, but the final assignment sending you to Empire Waters isn't available until March 17th, 1943. So rather than Hold you at Mare for that time, or crash right at San Francisco, which would only seem sensible to do, if there is something wrong there, the game lets you go all the way across the Pacific Ocean, do the mission, and then come back 2/3 of the way across that same ocean, before it crashes... yeah! :yeah: - This begs another string of pb questions: 1. Where were you the night June 12th, 1978 at 9:32pm? 2. Did you do the three shakedown / test missions at Mare? We might add a fourth one, with a trip to the Zone and back or something... maybe encounter an IJN I-4 sub, maybe another with some Ko Hyoteki's to launch at you... Either that, or like has been suggested, blow Mare Island out of the water - well actually, Treasure Island... but not use San Francisco at all. :salute:

1. Where were you the night June 12th, 1978 at 9:32pm?

At a Heart concert in Lakeland Florida. Standing right in front of Nancy Wilson.

No shake down/test mission was offered. I was tasked to go straight to Japanese homer waters from San Francisco. Area 8 and await further orders. When I get to area 8 I am given autonomy to do as I wish.

When I leave I go straight to Bungo Suido because my first time there a Task Force was seen 12/25/1942 and I have sunk a CV and BB before escaping and my ultimate crash at Pearl. If I make it there by the 25th the Task Force is always there but if I home at Pearl before going it never appears on the 25th.

Do you guys have the periscope depth sound sequence (with the ring bell)?

Because after the first one (at first dive) i never got it back for all session...
Just as the radar mast animation!! :D :haha:

Have to reload game to get it back...but avalaible for one time

An other strange computer oddity.

so...let me get this straight...diving from the surface to periscope depth results in the diving bell only the first time you do it?
are you using the "p" key to dive from the surface to periscope depth?

do you routinely cruise partially submerged?
do you use the "Dive" command and then level off at periscope depth after you submerge?

these are just some questions that popped into my head as i read your post.
i have never experienced what you described.

Yes, only the first time. After, i never get it again.
Yes, with the P key.
No, only totally surfaced.
No, no D key. I always go periscope depth, and then dive deeper if needed.
