Welcome Finland.

What happened to Sweden, did they bottle it?

The only way '12 units and divisions' could be formed without mass conscription would be taking troops from the east and I'm sure the Chinese would be all in favour of this.

(Reuters) - Russia will strengthen its military capacity in its western and northwestern regions in response to Finland's expected accession to NATO on Tuesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said, state-owned news agency RIA reported.

Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO last year after Russia invaded Ukraine. Finland has a 1,300-km (810-mile) border with Russia that will roughly double the transatlantic alliance's frontier facing Moscow.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said last year that Russia was taking "adequate countermeasures" and would form 12 units and divisions in its western military district.

Grushko told RIA: "We will strengthen our military potential in the western and northwestern direction. In the event that the forces and resources of other NATO members are deployed in Finland, we will take additional steps to reliably ensure Russia's military security."

^ Pffft... It was only a few months ago that they have massively withdrawn units from the border with Finland in order to be able to militarily maintain their invasion of Ukraine. This clearly says how much they actually feel "threatened": not at all.

Done!

The length of Russia's border with Nato member states has now doubled.

Finland are in a better position militarily than the majority of NATO members.

Reece 04-05-23 06:22 AM

I thought Poland would have shared that position. :hmmm:

Jimbuna 04-05-23 07:17 AM

Indeed but Finland specialise in certain areas such as artillery and manpower reserves as well as specific training based on fighting Russia (Finland's ground, naval and air forces are all trained and equipped with one primary aim - to repel any Russian invasion.)

^ I like that, I like it a lot! :Kaleun_Applaud:

Yes, a big gain for NATO.

Putrid wanted to push back NATO but what he has achieved is to strengthen it and brought NATO to the Russian border.

The vultures at the Kremlin realise this and if anything will strengthen the will of those who plot to overthrow him.

He so to say, shot him self in the foot with a big gun, by invading Ukraine.

One problem being the possibility that whoever replaces him will be even more brutal.

It'll take a few years for the power struggles to play out but i'll bet it'll be a lot like that English movie "The Death of Stalin".

You got that one right. Our only hope is that the rebels force their leader into place. Send Putins generals west to face war crimes charges.

Skybird 04-06-23 07:22 AM

The "rebels" in this case are not the good guys. ;) There are no good guys.
