If you are right and it is actually U-596 then this is SECOND factual mistake I found in U-boat publications this week. Too bad the picture is too grainy to identify the crest on the conning tower but I am still convinced that the picture in question is indeed U-201 and here is why: U-201 carried the coat of arms of city of Remscheid. This one: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._Remscheid.png U-596 in her whole career carried these three crests: http://www.uboataces.com/emblems/596.jpg So if you take a good close look at the picture you can see that the crest on the conning tower is split in two halves (darker at the bottom and lighter on the top). I am leaning towards coat of arms of Remscheid. Just out of curiosity, would you mind to share your source of the picture? |

:D Hi everyone:D
I never thought it would be such a success this thread:lol: when I decided to start it . I hoped for 2-3 pictures . I have never seen so awsome , interesting , nice pictures of german submarines ever:) Maybe it will show some pictures our modders can use in the future , and made wondeful mods , and keep the SH3 alive , for years to come:yep: This pictures that you all have been so kind to share with us , shows that this forum has more nice pictures than the famous "uboat.net ":smug: I hope that someone in the future will "click" themselfes in SUBSIM , instead of "uboat.net" to get references regarding SH3 , models , or even posters:p I know some of the pictures is taken from "uboat.net , but not all . Some have a familyalbum they will share , and somone know somebody who served in these interesting boats It is with great pride to say , I am very proud to be a member or whatever in this forum:yep: Someone says there are few left in SUBSIM of the old ones , but hey , the new ones gonna take over , and lead the heritage further . SO THANK YOU ALL FOR SHARING THESE WONDERFUL PICTURES ! I SALUTE YOU ALL ! So come on people , show us some more pictures:) http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/3861/uboatfo0.jpg |

Originally the U-201 carried two small crests of Remscheid on the both sides of the conning tower, around May 1942 the crest was enlarged and moved to the center of the tower. Sometime during 1942 two snowmen were added to the each side of the crest (as a practical joke, the captain's name was Adalbert Schnee, 'schnee'='snow' in German). It was the early version of the insignia where snowmen had "melting" bases and were holding brooms. Again sometimes during 1942 but definitely before August 8th they were changed to snowmen on your picture (no brooms and decorated with Knight's Cross). http://www.uboataces.com/emblems/201.jpg  Quote:
