On the other hand, look over some of the comments that have been made: many scenes are longer, the pregnant French girlfriend is an actual character, the captain actually explains his actions in abandoning the English sailors to their fate, there are many extended scenes, many more battle scenes, a couple of extra crash dives and the whole thing is NARRATED by leutnant Werner. Yes, overall it IS that much better. I have all three versions, and I never watch the Director's Cut anymore. Or the original. |
I had the original release on vhs. Then I bought the Directors cut on DVD. Once I wore that out I went ahead and got the original uncut 6hr version. Ive watched prt of it now and like Sailor Steve says, the quality is a bit lower than the Directors DVD version, however, it has so far delved a lot more into the characters, has a few more intense scenes and is over all a better movie so far. I highly recommend it.

Sound is worse?? Really? Are there two versions of that, because I thought the Uncut version I have was remasterd as well?

We're talkin yer average *******s here. Trying to get these guys interested in a 6 hour movie where not much happens and then the boat gets sunk at the end is like trying to get guys to watch porno without any nudity. It takes a special person to really understand Das Boot. Apperently Im the only one around there so far. Not sure what that says about me.... :rotfl: |
I have the uncut version, and I also had the superbit. I had gotten rid of the superbit and kept the uncut version.
I also watch in German w/ subtitles. But since I do understand German it is easy for me. Now after reading this whole thread I am going to watch it yet, again.:yep: |
Well i finally bought it and watched it (box says original 6 hr version from mini-series but with new Dolby 5.1 sound in german and english-whatever that means).
One of the best movies I've ever seen--I've always disliked movies with subtitles but after a few minutes into it--it was as if i really didn't notice there were even subtitles at all if you know what i mean. Also, I was so entrenched in it--the six hours really did not feel like watching a six hour movie:up: Halfway through the book now. Ps. sailor steve--I finally see what you mean about the chief mechanics being called by thier first names:D . |

Done
I watched the uncut version and liked it very much. Comments from Werner was best. Subtexts was not so good as it could be (english subs) - when bootsman tells the lads that their hometown football team lost he says the name of the team, but translated "our home team" etc. and "no chance to finals" when he said no chance to semi-finals. Yes I know I am a prick... |
Have you ever saw U-571? Although slightly different from Das Boot, still one of the best sub movies I ever saw!!

U-571 is one of the worst sub movies I've ever seen. An anime movie about a ww2 sub would be more realistic than U-571 |
