Ahh.... COMNAVWIFEPAC or COMNAVWIFELANT.

I had one too. You may have a CO, XO, DIVO and others... but the most important one in your career is the boss at home.

What's your rate, Chief?

Really? Everyone likes Enemy at the Gates? I guess I'm the only one. I thought the real life story was neat, but the plot that hollywood used surrounding the story was soo predictable and cliche'-ish. I remember toward the end of the movie, we were all actually predicting outloud the next lines of the actors before the actors could say them, with a very high degree of accuracy, and were laughing a couple of times at how predictable, cliche, and cheesy the whole romance and love story was at times! Again, liked the story, but the production value of the movie lacked. Who's with me on this one? Anybody? Please, somebody? Nobody? :()1:

And I must reiterate, the original uncut version of Das Boot is way better than the Director's Cut!!!

And would Indiana Jones be considered a WWII movie? Number 4 is soon on the way, in case you haven't heard!

Have you read the book? Have you seen the interviews? Had you read letters sent to people around the world who witnessed the event?

In the lead, Winters got to the road first. He leaped up on it. Right in front of him, only a few feet away, was a German sentry with his head down, ducking the incoming fire from Reese's machine-guns. To his right, Winters could see out of the corner of his eye a solid mass of men, more than 100, packed together, lying down at the juncture of the dike and the road. They too had their heads down to duck under the machine-gun fire. They were all wearing long winter overcoats and had their backpacks on. Every single one of them was facing the dike; he was behind them. They were only 15 meters away.
Thats the scene set.

Quote:

Winters wheeled and dropped back to the west side of the road, pulled a pin of a hand grenade, and lobbed it over toward the lone sentry. Simultaneously the sentry lobbed a potato masher back at him. The instant Winters threw his grenade he realized he had made a big mistake; he had forgotten to take off the band of tape around the handle of the grenade he kept there to avoid an accident.

Before the potato masher could go off, Winters jumped back up on the road. The sentry was hunched down, covering his head with his arms, waiting for Winters's grenade to go off. He was only 3 yards away. Winters shot him with his M-1 from the hip.

The shot startled the entire company. The SS troops started to rise and turn towards Winters, en masse. Winters pivoted to his right and fired into the solid mass.

Winters described what happened next: "The movements of the Germans seemed to be unreal to me. When they rose up, it seemed to be so slow, when they turned to look over their shoulders at me, it was in slow motion, when they started to raise their rifles to fire at me, it was in slow, slow motion. I emptied the first clip [eight rounds] and, still standing in the middle of the road, put in the second clip and, still shooting from the hip, emptied that clip into the mass."

Germans fell. Others began aiming their rifles at Winters. Others started running away from him. But all their movements were awkward, hampered by those long overcoasts.
And finally, where were his other men??

Quote:

He dropped back to the west side of the road. Looking to his right he could see Talbert running crouched over leading his column. It was still 10 meters from the road. Winters's own column , in the middle, was struggling through the field. Peacock's column on the left was 20 meters short of the road, held up by some wires running across the field.
That will do to make me feel better that he was uncovered shooting and shooting at germans and 10+ didn't manage to shoot him back. Or 100+ or however many Winters said were there. Bloody liar he was

I would tend to believe the guys who were there and witnessed the action rather than some people on a gaming forum, it has been well documented. I am sorry some of you can't believe that yes some Germans were stupid and sat around in a field waiting to die.

Just because your in the military doesnt make you a genius. Just ask some survivors of Arnhem what they think of Montys plan. You would think a British General wouldnt be stupid enough to drop his troops 8!!!! miles away from the target and ignore photographs that clearly showed German Tanks sitting camoflagued in the woods.

Every part of BoB was made from the real life accounts of the guys who fought, each episode has a rundown of whats going on by one of the guys who were there, and in the "Crossroads" episode you will notice that the guys in the beginning of the episode (none of whom are Dick Winters) all confirmed what he did on that day.

There are even several other documentaries that support what happened on that day, and they are also told by the men who fought that day.

I may be quoting "Rotary Crewmans" post but this is directed at EVERYONE who thinks BoB is a pile of rubbish. This action happened, maybe not to the degree portrayed in the show but it did happen nonetheless, accept it and move on.

I am with you Jason, Enemy at the Gates was utter rubbish, British actors are playing Russians and speaking with british accents and the main German is played by American Ed Harris, talk about a piece of crap. Aside from the opening scene (crossing the Volga) it was a real piece of crap.

Stalingrad was done much better.

Nice list Irish, i wish i couldve had more than 8 options to list, but i will add up the "others" soon enough to make a better tally of what everyones been posting for that one.

@All - How about shifting the focus here a bit and having a top 5 list? i could add them all up after say 30 days and post the list of the favorite WWII movies as voted on by the forum members.

Sarge4109 02-25-06 10:26 AM

Saving Private Ryan

But if you know History, about the Band of Brothers and 101 Air borne units, and 502 , will know that the series or ,parts, or the all thing are actually based on real events...

For info, the crossrads parte, in real life, the german batellion was camped at the crossrads section cause they also didn't had the nolidge of the sise of the American force that they had in front, so they were kind of using the "sonar" and "Hidrophones" trying to understand the sise of the american force, so they took to much time and it was to late for some of them, as for the rest of the batallion, if you saw the part, you will know that made a kind of smart retreat and regruping for atacking hours after the other 502 company and destroy it almost completly...

I stick to Band of Brothers

Well, I hope that she stays away from the Wives Club. You think German propaganda was bad in WWII, check that place out.

BTW. I was an Airdale working as an Aviation Ordnanceman (AO1). I popped four disks in my back during Operation Enduring Freedom while moving a GBU-31 JDAM. They couldn't fix me so they sent me home with a medical retirement. It's sad... I really miss being at sea.
