The problem being it takes at least four hours after berthing for immigration to clear off the passenger list and as was the case a few years ago, I doubt the skipper will give him the day off this time for the sake of a few hours.

Sure will matey....sure will

Jimbuna 07-04-15 08:22 AM

Boy brings his ship into the Tyne tomorrow and the weather forecast is 20C with scattered showers but the main thing is the skipper is allowing him four hours off so I'll be collecting him and bringing him home to suffer some of his mams cooking :)

Sent me a couple of photos of the voyage/navigation plan he has prepared for entering the Tyne.

Yowser, I bet he could master the SH3 manual TDC and DW fire control plotting with his eyes closed.

What a great day for you. I would love to hear what he has to say about his typical day, what challenges he has to deal with, etc. I know his job has a lot of responsibility. Not just anyone can fill those shoes and get it done.

How many tugs?

Jimbuna 07-04-15 09:21 AM

IIRC she is fitted with the Voith Schneider system:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voith_Schneider_Propeller

....meaning she can turn on her own axis, so she will head up river for a mile or so to the rivers widest point before turning 180 degrees, going alongside her berth ready facing the exit direction to the port and have the assistance of a tug fore and aft if the currents are overly strong, otherwise they are on slack lines eg. standby mode.
