Hello all from Berlin / Germany

48 years old "Grandpa" greets all "Subsims" !!!

Btw: some help/hinds would be welcome cause i cannot re-install my beloved SH3.
Every Time i try it out i receive a Message called "Starforce-driver not compatible". I finally upgraded them over HP but - grrrr - the Error occurs again :damn:

See you all inside Forum...

Newbie - well OLD newbie !!!

Sorry, OLDIE/newbie here.
Have ALWAYS played PC wargames (Total Annihilation , Supreme
Commander , Harpoon (old versions) , old GNB and SH1 (i think?)
etc. etc).
And recently Other Half bought me the latest Harpoon Multi-Pack
so I'm reliving old-days

Been watching Pacific War movies lately so got a yearning for Carrier
type game (Carriers at War ?!?)
and watching Crimson Tide / WW2/Cold War Sub films got me thinking
I'd like newer (?) better (??) version of SH1.

QUICK question (I'll troll the site for indepth opinions !!) . . .
Which version runs (best?) on XP Home Edition ? SH3,4, or 5 ??
Also I'm on a WAS-Fairly-good-2-years-ago-PC so will 4/5 run
OK or are they TOO good if you know what I mean ??

If it's not a rude question, what other Ship/Sub sims are OK on
XP Home Edition ???:zzz::zzz::zzz:

SORRY

NO! TOO MANY STEVES!

Oops. I mean WELCOME ABOARD / BACK! :sunny:

I can't help you with the other type games, but SH3, 4 and 5 will all run on XP Home (that's what I have as well). The problem is more likely to be system management. For best results overall you need at least a dual-core system, at least 4 GIGS of RAM (8 is best for SH5) and at least a 512 MB independent graphics card (1GB is best, and onboard graphics are right out).

That said, I'm still working with a seven-year-old single-core system, and it runs SH3 and SH4 pretty well and SH5 barely. The first two are alright as long as I don't apply too many big mods, meaning graphics-intensive ones like FM New Interiors. If your system is even close to what I described above you should be alright.

Thanks S'S' !

Luv a quick reply on a new forum . . . makes it feel REAL ?!

errr, It's a Dell Intel Quad Core 2 @ 2.33GHz ?!?!? (from the SYSTEM thing in Control Panel !)
4GB RAM

Graphics ARE onboard, but, I had to put my old nVidia card in to run Supreme Commander !! =
GeForce 6610XL 800MHz 128-bit 1599MB total 128MB GDDR3 dedicated (??)
I thought it was a 1GB card, but I don't know now from that !

I know a LITTLE but not the nitty-gritty stuff (dangerous, I know:nope:)

I think, as you say, as long as they all RUN then SH5 may be wishfull,
SH4 smoother, and SH3 best if a little older ???

Fat-"getting-more-interested"-Steve

SORRY, WHERE SHOULD I CARRY ON ASKING THESE BEGINNER
QUESTIONS ???????????????????????????
[obviously not here !!!]

My first post to this forum. SH3 fan.

Hello all.
My first post to Subsim forums although I have been a member since August 2009.

I am British male 53 years old. I have been playing subsim games since 1987 when I got my first copy of Silent Hunter for an old AMSTRAD 6128 home computer (which is STILL working as a solid but basic typewriter for my dad).
Over the years I have upgraded machines but have stuck with subsim games. I'm now running Silent Hunter 3 on a SEMPRON 1.25GB, 256MB ATI graphics card and 300GB HDD, Windows XP Pro machine. Absolutely fine for my needs.

I am here because I am going to attempt some MODS for the first time for SH3.
I must admit to suffering some confusion as to which MODS are needed and the order in which to apply them. I am sure I am not alone as there are now so many MODS from a vast supply of moders. I will take my time reading through the forums to find what works for me. I appreciate the fact that no single guru can probably put together a truly authorative list of what MOD to apply and in what order. Time for me to have a play and see what happens.

I will keep a good set of records and notes of my trials and errors and I may return to the forums and post my findings. No guarantee.

Many thanks to all who have posted before me.
