Why didn't they just call U-571 "Nazis On A Submarine" and bill it as a comedy?
"Enough is enough! I have had it with these mother****ing Nazis on this mother****ing submarine! |

Destination Tokyo is also pretty bad set-wise. Look for the scene right at the start of the movie when Cary Grant is entering the USS Copperfin. That is supposed to be the conning tower he is walking though, but it looks huge! Still like The Enemy Below, they are still great sub movies. :yeah: One of my biggest peeve pets is sub movies that show American Submarines with the Hydrophone operator in the command center. :damn::damn: Here is an almost interesting submarine movie trivia question What Hollywood WWII submarine movie had a scene where the characters were commenting that another Hollywood WWII submarine movie was unrealistic. Name the submarine movie and for extra points name the in-movie referenced submarine movie. |

I'm assuming that when U-99 was forced to surface and the crew was rescued that Kretschmer either destroyed the enigma or it sank before any allied forces were able to get inside? On this one I am being lazy rather than thumbing through the first volume of Hitler's U-Boat War, one of the benefits of percocet is that its just satisfying to sit and do absolutely nothing and be happy  Das Boot has no equal and doubtfully will ever have any movie come close. Comparing U-571 to it is like looking at a bag steaming full of **** with the same bag next to it just that its made out of solid gold. There was another wwii sub movie that if it's on I'll put it on as its somewhat enjoyable - Destination Tokyo. Not a very realistic movie, but do enjoy watching how well they do with using models (especially for a movie so old) and getting through the subnets. One of the few movies that shows any external views of the sub underwater as it navigates through minefields or sneaks around with a BB right above it to hide its noise from all would be DD's. |
I'd agree with your comments regarding the film Das Boot....I'm also wondering how accurate the control room was on that Typhoon in Hunt For Red October...it looked ultra technically complex to me :hmmm:

The Hunt for Red October was an entertaining film, if its airing I'll turn it on. It's not like if the full ws Tora Tora Tora pops on that I'll drop what I'm doing to watch it; but its great background noise and has some great scenes in it despite its questionable validity. While it was a better than average movie as war films go, it pales in comparison to the book. Seeing Sean Connery in command and in full form is great, just one that I feel would have been much more special had it not been made into a movie. |

Can totally equate to the dub + subtitle experience, I watch a lot of anime (if my username wasn't a tipoff, yes I've been one of them for 20 or so years) and having studied Japanese (for a few years worth as an undergrad) well enough to watch something w/o needing the subtitles (most of the time) it can get infuriating how even the subtitles don't even match what they're saying! Even putting aside the horrible dub performance the way they butcher the script god is forced to kill a kitten every time someone voluntarily watches it. Though the funniest subtitle incident I've run across is from Hard Boiled (Hong Kong Cinema) where the two main characters are speaking in English and the subtitles don't even match what they're saying :har: |

I think McHale's Navy was PT Boats, too bad. Ernest Borgnine as a submarine commander would be great!
Wasnt Petticoat Junction about submarines? Ok no. Wackiest ship in the Army? Operation Petticoat! |

Altho no one really knows for sure what might have been lurking in that water tower over in Hooterville... you just can't trust city folk. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...tle_screen.jpg |
