I've read close to 4000 books in my life to this point and I have to tell you, the Aubrey/Maturin series is by far the highlight. I didn't discover this series until later in my life. O'Brian is a literary master, on the level of Melville, Austen, and Conrad. The Chicago Tribune calls him "The best novelist in the world". The stories are character driven, the prose is ornate and nuanced to such a degree that you will wonder why so many other authors get away with spoon feeding their readers.

If you enjoy the first one, then you will rejoice when I tell you there are 19 more, all excellent. :shucks:

They are so well written that you really feel you are there, you can feel desperate at being in the doldrums, you go to amazon and order "Harbors and High Seas" and "A sea of words" just to make sure you get your facts and meanings rights (and even as a Costa Rican and native spanish speaker my domain of the English language is quite good, even translated some scientific papers for NASA sponsored symposium and got into a spirited argument with one of my engineering instructors ( his parents were British, he is Jamaican born, and attented college in Scotland so Professor Bloomfield do knows the Queen`s English)

but I digress, they are something you just have to READ, if you like Naval history, its mandatory, as is "The hunt for Red October", "Red storm rising" and having "Das Boot (director`s cut off course)"

Master and Comander is IMO one of the best films ever covering that period, and with enough detail to keep those of us with an interest in 18th/19th century warfare happy.

Gladiator was also very good but was spoiled for me slightly by them using recordings of the film Zulu, during the opening scene in the German forest to mimic the taunts the germans were thowing at the romans. A small matter but one which stuck.
The music however is excellent and I have it on my Gramaphone playlist in SH3.

Gladiator had some shocking anachronisms but overall it was a pretty entertaining remake of "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire". I loved "Master and Commander" too.

Russ is a Bunnies fan so he's all right in my book. GO YOU BUNNIES!

I'd love a sequel to M&C. It's a more "realistic" take to naval combat over seas as opposed to Pirates of the Carribean and its giant whirlpool battle......:88)

I thought A&E's Horatio Hornblower with Ioan Gruffudd was not badly done for a TV series. I don't think they're going to do any more though which is a pity since they hadn't got to my favorite books in the series yet. I would have really liked to see a film version of "Commander Hornblower".

I liked that series too, quite well done. Pity, A&E used to be a quality channel. Now they run Dog the Bounty Hunter Marathons.

Nearly two year old now but I guess this is what happened to some of the equipment used in the series:

I like Hornblower, the last episode that they filmed seemed to wrap up the series but more episodes would of been nice.

I'd love to see a tv movie of A Captain From Conneticut

Bummer. That doesn't bode well for new episodes!

Ha ha ha! Yes!

I've been waiting for the next one.
Only shame is that they didn't try to actually make film one like book one and set it up for a series... ok, 21 films would be a lot, but they could have put two or three books in one film.
Not that the mix-n-match plot of the film is bad. I really enjoyed it! (Though they had to turn USS Norfolk into Acheron to make it watchable for the average American. :-?)

Really looking forward to this one! I appreciated the accuracy of the uniforms, etc in the first and know they will do so again in the second!

On another note... why has Hollywood not made a film about Trafalgar yet?!
It would make such an excellent film. Granted, there are no ships-of-the-line avaliable for filming other than HMS Victory (which I would avoid - she's a relic and doesn't deserve all the clutter of a major motion-picture crew), but CGI has progressed amazingly.
If I were to make a film, I would cast Nigel Lythgoe as Nelson (I think its mostly the hair) and would present Collingwood as the main character. The film would open with Collingwood going before the Admiralty in Gibraltar and flashback to the events leading to the battle. The film would explore Collingwood's friendship with Nelson, the Lord's affair with Lady Hamilon (albeit briefly, as to not turn this into a 19th c. Pearl Harbor), and the aspects of Nelson's larger-than-life fame (both sides of the coin, so to speak). Finally, the film would rise towards the climax with the battle itself and earn the film the fame of having the largest, most realisitc, and well-done naval battle in film history! The climax itself, however, would be Nelson's death and his return to Britain in HMS Pickle.
Might I add that I would have Zimmer compose the score. King Arthur has a fantastic set of sounds and an excellent theme, and I would ask for a score similar to King Arthur's, perhaps with musical elements of the times (such as strings, like in the opening theme of Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and wind instruments).
