Anyway, I used to smoke - quit about 8 years ago. But back in the day (Like that? Makes it sound like I've been around a while), I was a stupid 19 year old and took off to Alaska (Dutch Harbor) to make some fast money on the fishing boats. I say stupid because working on those boats is not a very safe thing to do in my opinion, and even stupider (like that word?) because I did it twice or two tours of duty (Money makes you do stupid things sometimes I guess)! One day, our boat was waiting on a part before we could leave, and the part wasn't scheduled to arrive till the next day, so a few of my crew decided to climb some local mountain. I asked if I could go with (nothing else to do but get drunk in port and eat expensive $40 medium sized pizza's!! Everything costs a premium up there because they know these fishing guys got money, and a lot of it!) but they initially denied me, claiming I was a smoker and couldn't keep up (I smoked about 1 to 2 packs a day). Anyway, before this post gets too long and to keep the story short - I beat them to the top of that mountain, and they did not think that was possible! They even thought I'd never make it to the top either!

I of course have a photograph of me standing on top of that mountain, overlooking the sea with a cigarrete hanging out of my mouth having a smoke! :p

LO!L!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I love that! I've been online, and I have lit a menthol ciggy just a few moments back, and I sit here puffing, and all of a sudden I read your thread and I feel a bit better about it all. Normally I only smoke on Fridays, but hey, near enough!

I used to be the most venomous anti-smoker going till I took it up, don't regret it, but I do think it would be better if I had not have. Especially considering I am health conscious. I don't think the two go together really.

Sometimes I do both at the same time, it gets second glances from joggers. I slide past them, not too fast, in a black coat, puffing like a steam train :)
Most people live and let live, which is nice.

I like that story, Subman. One may look any number of ways with a cigarette, but never look healthy. Even on top of a mountain :p

Good show, I would love to see the Alaska range. You sounds to be like a guy I climbed with this summer. Every stop we had, people gasping and panting in thin air, he smoked some cigarette. Amazingly, he moved better after that... some kind of ruissan style climbing I guess. ;)

cheers Porphy

Hahahaha! Too funny! I might actually post the pic, not like you recognize me though since I probably haven't shaved in the pic in about 2 months! Working 16, 18, or even 20 hour days and you don't have time for the luxury of a shaved face!

I, personally, cannot stand or use ciggarettes. It does weird stuff to my sinuses. Nose blockages, itchy eyes, ect. Only cigs, though. Cigars wont do the trick. I don't have any plans to start smoking anytime soon, and I don't plan on planning to start. Must be allergies, or something.:-? Otherwise, I'm as fit as a bear!:|\\

I am 15, I play football and wrestle. In wrestling we ran 3 miles in under 30 minutes, then practiced wrestling moves with someone 40 lbs heavier than me, requiring both physical strength and endurace. Much Harder than football. That and having to drill a new move against someone stronger and more nimble than you till you get it right. I think he had a half nelson behind me, and I was standing up. I had to grab his elbow, and yank my arm back and turn my hips into him, taking him down, then work a pinning combination. In football we would run a 1 mile indain run. (Everyone Runs in single file, coach blows his whistle and the person in the back has to sprint to the front). Then go lift weights after running stair (stadiums) after that we donned our gear and practiced for 3-1/2 hours. Then we would get a few hours rest then we would have an afternoon practice for 4 hours. In 95 degree heat. That was two a days. Right now, I am trying to eat 225 grams of protein a day so i can gain muscle. We run 8 40 yard sprints with a tire straped to us on a 5 yard rope for resistance. Then we take it off and run without it. After that we lift weights. Bench,Hangclean, lats, glutes, curls, shoulderpress. If we are doing upper body. Somone go top that. That is my life as an up-coming sophmore in HighSchool on the Offensive line. I weigh 220lbs and started last year running a 40 yd sprint in 6.7 now i do it in 5.7.

Don't smoke and haven't had a drink since first week of January so fingers crossed.

Got health problems there if so good luck with the test results.

Hi STEED and thanks for your concern. The blood test is connected with me on the verge of 'emigrating' back to my Homeland.
Everything OK except the cholestorel which is too high [7.2 instead of 5 = oh dear !] so have started a cholestorel thread

I don't smoke, I don't exercise but I do take care of what I'm eating. Thankfully having to teach, do experiments in the lab and spend loads of hours in front of a computer screen writting programs to solve complex maths doesn't require fitness levels. When the weather is good I enjoy going for long walks in the countryside, along the river etc. Other than that I feel I'm just an ordinary guy, probably a couple of Kgs heavier than I should have been, but I'm quite happy with my life and life style.

The poor fellow can't help it. He was born big boned. Perhaps someone can save him by banning trans-fats, animal meat, cigarettes, potato chips, McDonalds, home schooling, the internet, driving iso walking. My goodness the list goes on and on.

STEED 03-09-07 06:53 PM

At the end of the day live your life the way you want. :shifty:

So what do you think the other guy doing the firemans carry is thinking?:D

baggygreen 03-10-07 06:47 PM

from the look on his face, it has to be "who let one rip??"

As for fitness, well lets see. We do around 5 km of high-intensity running (75% effort or more), double that amount of endurance running, core strength work (planks, pushups, situps, crunches...) Thats only the bare minimum. The best guys in the country for it run marathons for fun.....:shifty:

In addition to that, I've got plenty of weights at home which keep me busy in my quest to gain weight... Im 6'1 and i think the conversion works to about 115 lbs. Extremely high metabolism rate, i used to eat whatever i wanted and not gain a kg, now i eat smart n slowly am gaining. Non smoker, rare drinker (always designated driver).

To top off the physical stuff, I enlisted on friday, so that's gonna get me nice fit as well! not that im not already, but i wanna be number 1 in the country for my job
so i needa work harder.
