Well it's good to know most people seem to have their head screwed on right in this forum. :D
Just one patrol was tempting, untill I realised even that meant around 4 weeks with 'smelly men' (is there any other kind, let's be honest) and the other side trying it's best to kill you, plus all the other horrors of war.
Just knowing that the torpedo I'm about to fire, will kill at least five sailors right off the bat on impact, plus the few drownings once the ship sinks, is enough for me not to order it.
A little too much stress for this city boy.
Of course, fighting for your country if you think the cause is right, at that moment, is a whole different matter.

edited for horrible spelling mistakes (that are probably still there, time for bed.)

If I am not mistaken, the 1st bomb that hit Berlin actually killed the only elephant in Germany.[/quote]

Now that is a fact I didn't know, and one I shall remember too:lol:

EDIT - @ The 'Hound Dogs' in this thread.

I would do 1 patrol, a training patrol
it would be nice to sail on a real Uboat
but in combat? I rather not to.
ofcourse I want to sink a dummy merchant for the training I would like to feel the experience to see that ship throught a periscope and KABOOM! Torpedo hit

It's quite simple: we know what happened during WW2, don't we?

We know the entire story, we know how many that died during those 6 years and 1 day of fighting (40-60 million dead, bloodiest war of all time).
We know the horrors, we know the tragedies.
We know how it ended.
The captains in the Kriegsmarine did NOT know all this. They knew only the facts that their commanders would tell them or the things they saw themselves......
Same goes for the R.A.F blokes, or the sovjet Red Army men.

They created history, so that we could read, listen, and see it. And what I've seen of it.....it wasn't pretty....and I can play how many WW2 games I want (and belive me, I DO),but give me 5 bullets and tell me to rush the hill and take up some other mans rifle when he dies......
or put me in a IXB U-boat and order me to stop the flooding in the engines compartment.....
or put me inside a B-17 and make me use a 30 caliber MG to try and save me and my friends lifes from a very fast, and indeed, a very deadly enemy......
IN REAL LIFE!!!!!!!!!

I'd be very,very,very scared indeed.

Dont worry Biggles, The General is just another internet warrior who is trying to impress the girl :nope: .

Looking back through military history shows us just how many civilians answer their countries 'call to arms' in times of need despite the fact the same source also points out the number of fatalities war inevitably creates. :hmm:

I salute them all

So if the Germans were bombing London and other major cities, rather than airbases, it was buying time.

Least thats what I thought.

You have some interesting insights into WWII--You will find General Fuller's Decisive Battles of the Western World interesting.

I would go even with all those living conditions I feel that the title u-boat captain is one of the most honourable titles out there especially if I continued after 1943. I've always pushed it to the extremes so why not travel back to WW2 and fight it

I think of it like this - the Uboats were like a hand around Britain's neck trying to choke us into unconsciousness. Rather than the fist slamming into our faces over and over till we were beat into an unconscious bloody pulp. Of course that changed with the bombing of the cities. Mind you, Churchill goaded Hitler to bomb cities rather than the airfields.

The whole idea of defeating Britain was very haphazard in my opinion. The U-boats were trying to cut off the supply lines and they very nearly succeeded.

No chance what so ever, two things the basic design of the U-Boats had hardly changed from WW1 and the second thing, Hitler ordered a massive cut back in the area of scientific research due the fact Germany was ahead of everyone else and mainland Europe was under Nazi control.

The cut back in research allowed the British to catch up and then over take Germany. It's true to say the U-Boats did indeed inflict major damage but they just could not win. When Hitler attacked Russia he sealed his fate as he bled his army white in Russia and not forgetting his other big blunder by declaring war on America.

As for the poll, some of you captains need a holiday. ;)

I agree on that 80% of hitlers army was fighting on the Eastern front, the German U-Boats were succesful and over exceeded their expectations by a fair margin (im just adding on to what you said). Somewhere in SH3 at the end of the war you get the message from donitz telling that you have succeded in your mission however the fatherland has fallen or something along the lines. I dont know if this is what he said in reality but heck it sure sounded like it.

mookiemookie 03-01-07 09:31 AM

When talking about blunders, don't forget that they put off the production of the Type XXI until it was too late as they thought they'd have the war won and there would be no need for it.

If i had a time machine?!

Buddy i would make history if i had a time machine.... not simply repeat it

First i would steal a german u boat then warp it back to my garden, then i would hijack Yamato and sell it to the highest bidder :p

Sooo many possibilitys, soo little time

I would probably go back though just to see what its like. experience can change views greatly

Also its quite easy to see some of the people on this board havnt had much contact with a girl in a loooong time :rotfl:
