You have over 5 hours of film there, including subtitles and an English dubbed version

I believe the one is digitally remastered and the second set of DVD is also remastered but adds more content that was omitted from the first remastered DVD. Three movies in all, original, digitally remastered with more content and digitally remastered and even more content. At least this is what I believe has happened.

The only thing I didn't like about Das Boot was that crappy '80s music that
played when they sped along to intercept. That was so out of place it wasn't
even funny

Otherwise, it was great, and that's coming from someone who hates subtitles
in movies

I agree: the english subtitles are lame!

I don't understand why everyone talks about the so called directors cut. Has no one heard about the TV-version (5 1/2 hours) ?? That is the version everone should watch. I bought it when it was re-relased in Germany (2004).

Albeit controversial, the Novel by Lothar Günther Buchheim is one of the best novels about WWII. I have read it at least five times.

But watch out: the language is rough! A good example is when he phantasizes about different shapes of the female sexual organ .. a dozen or so :)

I also learned some words from him: "Lochschwager" , "Fotzenneid" , "Pint" , .. and have used them ever since ..

He must have been a great guy, I like him.

This too is a good movie. To bad the time it was made that the CG effects was not around.

Das Boot didn't have CGI either, just models.

If you do get a chance to watch Run Silent Run Deep, watch for the strings pulling the torpedos and submarines under the water. It is quite comical but it was all they had at the time.
The other thing that's funny in Run Silent, Run Deep is the difference between the action scenes, which use models, and the non-action sequences with a real sub. You can really spot the difference between the way the water reacts with a submarine weighing several hundred tons and a model weighing a few pounds. No foam.

That to me is one of two places where Das Boot fails: the fact that the water reaction shows that the boat at sea is just a model. CGI might have helped there as well.

My vote for early u-boat movie: U-boote Westvarts.

I had known about the models for Das Boot and no CG around. If I'm not mistaken they sold one of the models. I believe it was just one of the conning towers used for close ups. A few guys throwing buckets of water off screen for effect;) But yes, scale of water compaired to model was off. Not quite as bad as the old Godzilla movies:o . I will have to watch Run Silent Run Deep again because I did not realize there was a few shots with the real deal. I guess they did that pretty well. You can't miss those strings though LOL!

During a production commentary, I recall Wolfgang Petersen saying he felt using a 1/6th scale model (35 foot) and filming at 55 frames per second was the best compromise for a realistic wave effect against the sub's hull. Another bit of trivia: the human figures on the above model were modified Barbie dolls.

Jimbuna 02-10-07 05:28 PM

That is corect kaleun :yep: ....you are well informed

I have the full length "uncut" version but I swear I saw footage in the theatrical release years ago I didn't see in the supposedly "uncut" version. I could be mixing my movies up here as it was a very long time ago, but I remember a scene where the Old Man gets a pair of socks made of human hair, and he knows exactly what that means. Also, I recall the Chief spending a lot more time in the battery compartment, with the fumes really hurting his eyes, and the bravery it took to go back in there.

So I'm not sure there is such a thing as a "full" version, just shorter and longer cuts with different variations of the million+ feet of film they shot.

I wasn't very happy with the print quality of the "uncut" version either.

Even though I have three different versions already (hey, I love the film), I have room for yet another Das Boot, one that has received the Criterion Treatment. A full, uncut Criterion Collection Das Boot release. Now that would be the ultimate version.

Psst, Criteron -- are you listening?
