July 12 1962: five scruffy youths performed for the first as a group with a name they had just adopted: The Rolling Stones; 58 years later, the Stones still roll along...
Their first single was appropriate for them; the A-side was a cover of a song written by one of their idols. US legendary rocker Chuck Berry... The A-side of their second single was a song written by and given to them by a couple of fellow UK musician/songwriters who were shopping around their songs on the London musical circuit as a side venture in case the the group they were in, also newly minted, should fail or fall apart; the songwriters would, and their own group would go on to be legends themselves and close friends of the Stones... The problems with band member heights actually led to one band altering their name; The Small Faces got their name because the members were all a bit on the short side; when new band members Ron Wood and Rod Stewart, who are both tall, joined the band, the "Small" was dropped from their name... <O> |
