Lancaster...

Touring the (really cramped! :o ) interior, starting with the BN's dome - and the formation of Harvards warming up on the other side of the lot.

Meanwhile nearby, a pair of flying B-17s are camped out as well (Memphis Belle and Chuckie)

Loudest planes at the show, surprisingly!
I also have trouble dissociating them with Zeroes from Tora! Tora! Tora! (where modified AT-6s were used at stand-ins for them). They put on a great aerobatic show later in the day.

Oooooh, lovely! Thanks, George.

And this last one is apparently not a replica but an original 1-1/2 Strutter (albeit heavily restored)!

That's because actually she is. First test flight was March 18, 1945 and first deliveries began in December 1946. While the plane didn't see service until after the war, she was designed and tested in that timeframe, which makes her very much part of the era. :sunny:

CCIP 06-19-11 08:25 PM

Good catch Steve! Didn't know she was actually flying before WWII ended, I actually thought that happened later.

So yes, I spent the weekend groping planes of all ages :D

Great shots guys. This thread's a keeper! Added to my subscribed threads.:yeah:

Egan 06-20-11 07:25 AM

Wow, George, That was one heck of a show!

Those WW1 aircraft look so small, don't they? Beautiful though.

Some great shots there and some great aircraft. I have a real soft spot for the USN carrier aircraft. The Wildcat and Helldiver in particular.

AVGWarhawk 06-20-11 08:40 AM

Great shots George! The Lancaster looks to be the same I have seen. She is menacing to say the least. The Helldiver is the one that attends WW2 Weekend. The Warhawk is beautiful! :D I love the WW1 bird shots. Gives you an idea how far aircraft engineering has come. Your show is a lot like mine. Hands on! Get right up to the aircraft and count the rivets if you want. I have not seen a PBY or Hurricane operate. That must have been a special treat. Now, with all that hair on your head I recommend the open cockpit Sopwith for you. Looks to have been a great show! Thanks for sharing! :yeah:

Penguin 06-20-11 09:43 AM

Thanks for the great pictures! :salute:
Those shots have some great angles and reveal some cool details of the planes!

Fantastic thread. When I used to go to airshows, anything with props used to bore me - I just wanted jets, and jets with afterburners at that (Buccanneers, Harriers and Vulcans excepted!). Now I'm mellowing in my middle-age, I see the beauty in all aircraft, old and new, civil and military.

Thanks guys. :DL

The RN might need this one back soon... :haha:

Nah, it's okay, we've nowhere to put it. :nope:

CCIP 06-20-11 10:58 AM

That Corsair put on an awesome show, too. I was really impressed with how much power that thing has for a WWII plane - climbed like it weighed nothing.

And yes, some of these aircraft are pure power. It must be a thrill to fly one.
