Any news on fixing up those torpedo doors? I hope they do get a bit of a working-over - shame to see them in that state now.

The rest of the boat looks fantastic though - what a profile!

No joke, CCIP. I say we take that sheet metal off of the torpedo doors and use it to fabricate hatches for the sonar dome openings.

AVGWarhawk 02-14-11 11:50 AM

If you take note....there is a missing torpedo shutter. There are six shutters in the bow. You see only two shutters on the starboard side in the picture above. In between these two was another shutter. It is not as bad as it looks although new sheet metal would be the tops! Welding work begins this week so I'm told. In all reality the stern needs a sheet of steel. The bow is in wonderful shape compared to the port stern. A cathodic protection system is being installed as well.

Repair on welded seam. Apparently quite a few of these are leaking and will be welded.

A photographic survey of the repairs will be done this weekend.

Matador.es 02-17-11 03:29 AM

Wow, some serious work has to be done there!

That middle photo of three above shows just how thin her skin must be in places.

She has some soft spots in the belly as it were. These are being repaired. My concern is the stern is missing quite a bit of sheet metal. I'm confident she will get what she needs! :yeah:

I sincerely hope so because my experience (in the UK) is that 'once they are gone' they never return!

nikimcbee 02-17-11 08:09 PM

Do they just chop out the this spots or are they going to patch over it, making it thicker?

Ducimus posted a link in the SH4 forum, showing what became of one of these boats:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=180401

Watching that video made me even more grateful of the work done to preserve some of these boats.

Yes, the soft spots are removed until good solid material is met. Then a plate is cut and welded.

Checking for leaks!!! Pressurizing the tanks!

She will get what she needs. So does the Constellation. These vessels are huge money makers for the city of Baltimore. You see they are in drydock now for repairs and not summertime when the visitors flow through them for days on end. :03:
