We can find cheapish accommodation but doubt it'll be a big swanky motel - it's all relative, I suppose.:) Youth Hostel? (it's only a name, age doesn't really come in to it!)

During the meet just past the guys slept in my (finished) basement on cots. They were willing to sleep on sailors racks aboard a WW2 Battleship. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be comfortable with "swanky"! :DL

In all seriousness, if we do the UK, where could we stay that would be low cost? Price could be a big issue for me for this one.

Jim's lawn. :O: Subsim block party!! :woot::haha:
I'm up for that:D Not sure if the neigbours would agree:doh:

I will be the first to say I haven't slept on a cot, let alone one that fit me, since I was in preschool. And I was actually kinda glad we didn't have to share room with Boy Scouts. Oh my. Just walking through that area was enough to make me question humanity.

I'm all for going to the UK though. I'll start investing into my savings. (that sounds slightly like an oxymoron)

Check this site out for accomodation in London

Just imagine what it was like when the galley was serving beans! :o

Of what.....the beans?

Oh, if you mean the venue then I'd nominate Oberon, he lives the closest to London.

Double oh and let me state this from the beginning, my attendance will be subject to getting the time off and Neal turning up....I have a few things I'd like him to take back across the pond for some of those I met in Texas (especially the t-shirt brigade) :DL

Aces lives in London... I notice he's not stuck his head in this thread though - doesn't want to get lumbered with a dozen or so hairy arse drunkards in his house :hmmm:

I think we all owe him a bevvy or two though! :yep:

Not wishing to come across as cynical but the numbers will drop drastically (not that many have voiced an interest thus far...very early days) as the time approaches.

This years Meet was possibly the best example of that, hence my cautionary 'heads up' in my previous post.

RL has an awful habit of throwing obstacles into the best laid plans when you least expect it.

Oberon 11-03-10 04:14 PM

I'm not as close as you'd think Jim ;) A good hour and a half to the outskirts, but admittedly, a heckuva lot closer than yourself and Herr B.
Besides, I'd be looking to kip at my Dads in London, where I usually go. :yep:

I'm nothing but a loser.:wah:

assuming I can make it. What kind of schedule do you have (Jim)? How long does it take to get from Newcastle to Londow?

...and what about Steed? We could stay with him?:hmmm:

I'm 250ish miles north, 50 minutes by plane, 3 1/2 hours by train and 5 hours by car.

Not that much when compared to US travelling but quite a lot in UK terms.

Yeah we could all have saved a lot of time and money had we known what our numbers were ultimately going to be. This is why I think it'd be best to come up with a plan for accommodations (and transportation too) that works regardless of how many (or few) show up.

It would be an enormous load off the mind of whoever draws the duty of figuring out the itinerary.

nikimcbee 11-03-10 09:47 PM

...or August, you could just move to the UK and we could stay with you.:hmmm:

krashkart 11-03-10 10:09 PM

How much should I expect to spend in attending a Subsim meet, not including airfare? :ping:

It's hard to say. If everyone bunks up at a members house and eats a lot of his wife's home cooked food :D , it's gonna be a lot cheaper than hotel rooms and restaurants.

Ground transportation costs can also vary considerably, ranging from car rentals to chipping in for gas money and parking garage fees. I'd imagine especially in England there'd be a fair amount public transportation like taxis and trains we'll be using too.

Aside from air fares there are four basic expenses to consider:

Living Accommodations, Food, Ground Transportation, Exhibit Admissions

Beyond that is whatever you blow on souvenirs and other optional stuff. Don't discount it though because that was one of my larger expenses at the meet just past.

As for exhibit admissions, that was pretty cheap here. I spent maybe a hundred bucks altogether over the entire weekend and some of that was restoration donations.

Couldn't agree more.....we'll see if anyone living in the Greater London or Southern area steps forward.

That will be a truer measure of the interest and viability of the next SS adventure.

If all else fails I should imagine a group of 'definites' can jointly agree an itinerary regarding places of interest and accomodation.

Where there's a will there is a way.

I would be up for a meet in London, as its only 2 hrs away by train for me. Or we could make it Liverpool as we could visit not only U-534 (even though shes in 3 pieces), but also Derby House, home to western approaches during WWII.

Although it is a bit early for me to commit, as real life can throw up unexpected obstacles when you least expect it.

I wouldn't have thought there is enough to see there....I'd have thought London or the south coast had a lot more content and choice.
