Start Googling "ATI driver problems" or something like that, and you'll realize that if anything can be more screwed up than NVIDIA, it's ATI.

Well funnily enough, the reason I moved from ATI to nVidia was because the Radeon 9600xt that I had wasn't fully compatible with my ASUS A7V8X-X motherboard (do a quick search you'll see lots of topics online). It was something to do with the AGP slot on the board trying to take data faster than the card could deliver it when used at 8x speed (dunno if that's the official answer, it's what I heard). This resulted in a system reset and the only way around it was to turn the AGP speed down to 4x.

Anyways, my SH4 problems seem to be fixed (mostly). I'm still getting a random CTD every once in a while, but if I make sure I save the game regularly when on patrol it's not a big issue. I usually save everytime I send a status report.

For those that may be interested, I managed to get the game working on the nVidia 175.16 drivers no problem. I've only suffered one random CTD, and I think that was a game issue rather than a graphics card crash.

In the end I decided to have a look at the nVidia forums and it seems a lot of people with a lot of different card types have problems with the newest drivers for some reason. For instance Sims 3 is refusing to load for many people using the 191.07 drivers, which are the same drivers that were causing my problems with SH4. Also some people can't install the new 195.xx drivers, as they're getting an error telling them they can't install the control panel and the installation quits.

SH4 now runs as well as SH3 did on my old ATI 128mb card (I'm running at medium settings). Which was great out at sea, but quite slow in dock. If I choose to start my missions at sea, then it's not that big an issue. I only use 1024 time acceleration as well, seems to bog down with anything higher... But I don't really mind about that.

Now I just need to get some practise in :D

I think I mentioned before that I also tried the 191.07 driver's and they were totally fudged up. Couldn't find a suitable driver's that would run SH4 right. That's why I switched to ATI.

I would have switched back, but my motherboard has had compatibility problems with the ATI cards before, so I was a bit worried about buying another ATI card that gave me the same problems as the 9600XT.

And besides, this PC is kinda old now and doesn't have any PCI Express slots, so if I'm gonna get a new card, I might as well replace my motherboard and processor while I'm at it.
