i never understood these comments people often make.

sh4 has much better grafics than sh3 when you compare stock unmodded game vs stock unmodded game

now how things move and are controlled is better in sh3 than it is in sh4 so i see both as having good and bad

many have never played sh3 stock game before adding gwx to it and if you always use gwx with sh3 and it makes so many changes you get spoiled into thinking thats how sh3 is but its not sh3 its gwx that makes sh3 look so good. dont give the credit to the game when its the gwx modders who deserve the credit.

Couldn't agree more!

GWX team forever!

This is very much what we in the UK call a 'chicken and egg' situation.

Whilst it is universally recognised the improvements GWX made to SH3, none of that would have been possible without the SH3 stock/vanilla game http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...ies/pirate.gif

shortly before Silent Hunter III was realeased I had my hopes up because I had seen the Intro, and thinking it was in-game action I got too excited and purchased the thing the very 1st day.. :( it was sad that the actual gameplay was unlike the intro..

You know what, I found stock SH4's graphics dull, dreary and grey and definitely inferior to stock SH3's. It was one of the reasons why the game didn't last long on my HD.

But hey, that's my opinion.

Unfortunately though, from what I've seen of SH5, it looks like I'm gonna have to get used to it or go back to SH3.

IGN is the source of the image.

Hmmmm, just went there and nothing like that. Maybe a secret page?

Sorry if I upset you Webster....it's just my oppinion that's all. I much prefer stock SH3 graphics to SH4 because SH4 graphics make me feel like i'm in a disney cartoon whereas SH3 graphics make me feel like i'm actually at sea in a U-Boat.

SH3 seems more "real" to me....so much so that I played SH4 for....mmm...two weeks maybe, wherease I've been playing SH3 since Feb 2005...and am still playing it.

Whilst i'm on the topic, does anyone want my copy of SH4 for free ? Yours to the first person to PM me.:yep:

^^ What Scones said (partially)
The worst part for me for Sh4 -was that the Visual atmosphere was let down by a bad draw distance.
The Water looked very strange indeed (until the sadly departed -Leo vampire stepped in) and the lighting during sunrise and sunset look no where NEAR as good as Sh3.

But Sh4 is now MUCH MUCH better looking thanks to the efforts of many of the modders here.
And Dont forget that Stock SH3 now looks like an arse made out of lego (by 2009 standards)
But it was bloody amazing in 2005 even on my humble 6600GT back in the day...

Sailor Steve 11-19-09 03:36 PM

Back when SH2 was released some reviewers said the graphics were already outdated. They weren't the best, but there were a couple of things that I still think are better than SH3 or SH4, most notably the way the wake from your boat rode on the water.

SH3's graphics are wonderful, but still look like a game (albeit a very nice one).

Stock SH4's graphics do indeed have problems, but the modded versions look much more real to me, even though I have to run it with every single option turned off.

SH3

SH4

I have seen - and taken - some absolutely gorgeous screenshots in SH3, and I wouldn't give it up for anything. That said, I've never made anything that took my breath away like this SH4 shot.

I think both games have beautiful graphics, but I feel SH4's are much more realistic on the whole. I can't wait to see SH5's.

Méo 11-19-09 03:44 PM

Indeed, very cool screenshots Steve!

/agree 100%

Sh3 was very impressive, but in Sh4 when the sun hits the horizon and you get that red reflection in calm waters, it's amazing.

After countless patrols I still have to stop and appreciate the graphics from time to time.

Yep, I think we will be seeing great things on the graphics front in SHV. ;)

JJ 11-19-09 04:06 PM

Personally I wouldn't care (much) if the graphics were from SH II if the AI was next to a sentient being and all the other aspects, convoys, wolfpacks, crew etc. worked liked their real life counterparts.

Not saying I don't appreciate mind boggling GFX, but like already mentioned, if they come with a cost of realism etc. it's never a good thing.

Wonder if we'll get the seagull droppings this time around :hmmm:

There has been some discussion about this picture...
Here is my conclusion based on evidence.

This picture must be in-game footage.

So far the development team have been using only one type of U-boat in the official screenshots they have released, and that is the Type VIIC/41.

[<=== see those things on the left.. only the Type VIIC/41 had them]

IT'S THE SAME DAMN BOAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
( ps: .. have you noticed how its the same boat without any AA guns?) The evidence is conclusive

In all the previous shots we see this same u-boat, with the fore-canisters, and schnorchel. I conclude that it is the same u-boat they are using for tests. I have not seen any other submarine type.

Webster 11-19-09 09:00 PM

i see something worse there, i see a stern sinking seperated from the ship (last picture under subs bow) so does this mean we get the lego block effect of ships seperating in sections rather than properly simulated ship damage? :06:

and unless im mistaken i think thats a night view based on the colors yet from underwater we see sunlight reflections on both the sub and ship which look nice but not if it is in fact nightfall.

as for "its the same boat" we do the exact same thing when we mod, we do it all with one boat and only when we are finished do we test the others out because most share all the same features. (do one, get it right, then transfer what you did to everything else)

Thats a good obeservation. but if the stern blew off, then that part of the ship gets flooded first and sp the ship is tailheavy and listing to stern.

why is the ship sinking bow first if the back blew off ?
