Type VII B or C.
|
I just can not c why anyone would favor the VII above the IX? What is it that I dont get? You have "half" the torpedoes to spend in the VII. Ranges are shorter, right; one advantage with the VII, you have more deck gun shells onboard, whoa, try your luck up from end '42 with it :P
I just dont get the point of stretching as far as possible to the middle of the atlantic where the sky is clear, to be enforced to turn back witin a few days cause you ran out of torp? The boat is a platform, it gives mobility to the tropedoes. But what if you dont have any onboard? nice platform.... mobile, but waste of efford and risk i guess. Aye |

The AA guns are pretty efficient ont he XXI if they are manned by petty officers with the AA rating and a goodly number of medals (they earn them quickly in an XXI). It only gets really flakey when you run into swarms of aircraft. |
Hmmm, its all about realism i realise. Do you have that MOD with which you can use ICBMS and take out England in about 30 minutes? Coole one! Down side the game ends afterwards :har:

I don't see the point of travelling all the way out to the middle of the Atlantic to be detected because of a noisy boat, and then being sunk by a destroyer to end your hunt. To each his own. :DL  |

If they had a mod that allowed a towed barge with a V2 missile I'd probably try it. |
Heck, if they come up with a SSN-774 Virginia sub mod, I'll even give that a try!!! It can be a hypothetical "Nazi Germany in the future after the US economy collapses" campaign. :D

Another vote for the type VIIB
Dunno, when I think u-boat I alway picture the VII Who know's,one day I might even survive long enough to get the chance to try one of the big new boats :haha: c'est la vie |

This is coming from someone who likes the big ladies... but the type VII is a lot more survivable. Harder to pick up for ASW ships, more nimble for sudden course changes to throw them off or to get into the right firing position. Your tonnage may not even be that much higher with a type IX. Let's assume I have sunk a few juicy merchants or a capital ship and would do my little victory dance if I wasn't afraid some British sonar operator would pick it up... often enough I'd simply sneak away in a type VII but fight it out with the escorts in a type IX, because shaking pursuers becomes noticably harder. As I said, I prefer to take down troublesome ships on my tail rather than run, so I don't get as much from the better stealth capabilities and appreciate the bigger loadout. In a type VII, this leaves rather few eels for merchants once you can't sink 10 of them with shells any more. |

I would love to see the simulation external cam of an attack on a convoy using a nuclear torpedo. :) |
I just started a campaign in the XXI, using one of those mods. I gotta say, having all those bells and whistles is really nice, right up until I run into a situation where I would rather gun down a merchant than waste an eel on it. I'm only three patrols in and already suffering deck gun withdrawals.
I'm getting myself back into a Type VII ASAP. :yep: |

Type VIIC, and maybe XXI
|
for me its the VIIC/42. Good rate of dive, plenty of fish, good range above and underwater, good speed on surface, and massive flak firepower. Twin C-38 and I dont have to dive as often in good weather. I just stay up and rack up the air kills, which really helped my renown in the vanilla game. Still waiting for that setup in GWX...early in my career.

VIIB and VIIC - I almost always sail in these
II - I just started my first-ever campaign with the 1st Flotilla in 1939, using a Type IIA along the English coast. I... love this little boat, and I am not sure why. IX - I sailed a IXB once. It was alright. I'm going to try it again someday, and maybe the IXC/40 with Schnelltauchback (once that mod is ready!) |
Type VIIC in the freezzy North Atlantic, that my Point. http://www.smilies-emoticons.de/brutal/brutal_2.gif

Type VII. Since I started to play on 100% realism I want every advantage I can have.
|
I'm more in to coastal hunting. So type VII it is, I prefer VIIC. Started my career in 2nd Flotilla 1939 with a VIIB. It's very manouverable and thats what I need in shallow waters. Also it's diving time is an advantage. Just did a test dive and as I reached 235m I heard some glass breaking so I decided not to go deeper. Thats more than I need around the English coastline anyway.
What I like about type IX is that they are very durable and spacious but since long distance patrols aren't really my thing I haven't started a career with it. In type II the limited range got me although it's a great feeling to hunt in it. |
