The movie is also inaccurate on several points. And, IMHO, not among the best war movies.
I did not know that. :damn:
I still think its the best war movie to ever come out. I suppose thats hollywood for ya, add in a german sniper to make things interesting.

I refuse to limit myself to just WWII, so I chose other...

Beside the modern war flicks, I'm also fond of:

"Zulu Dawn", "Zulu",
"For whom the bell tolls",
"The Best Years of their lives",
"The Gladiator",
"Gallipolli",
"Master and Commander on the far side of the world",
Lawrence Olivier in "Henry V"
"The Last of the Mohicans"
"Lawrence of Arabia"...

Obviously the list is limitless.

Cheers,

:nope:

Anthony Beevor in his AMAZING book "Stalingrad" talks about this supposed "duel" between Zaitsev and a top German sniper. He concludes that no such duel did take place although he admits that it is extremely difficult to distinguish fact from fiction during that battle. The culture of sniperism, as he calls it, was a huge propaganda tool for the Soviet army and apparently Zaitsev's most prized possession was a German sniper rifle that he claimed belonged to this German sniper. Beevor is of the opinion that Zaitsev was gently "told" to keep this illusion alive.

I cannot recommend Beevor's book enough...it is my favourite reading whenever I get "down in the dumps". I read it and thank my lucky stars that the problems I have are NOTHING compared to what soldiers on both sides of that battle were forced to endure. Buy it...trust me.

Midway is outstanding. There have been so many movies made on the subject ya almost have to pick a different movie for each theatre and also for each branch of service or for each specialty, (infantry, armor, fighter or bomber groups, etc.). Since this is a naval oriented forum though Das Boot is by far the best followed by The Enemy Below.

tnx for expressing so much tolerance.

The "point" I was trying to make is that there are so many great WWII movies, why place a limit on the jackpot. Everyone here has an opinion as to their favorite(s), I was just giving mine. My intension was not to offend, but merely to illuminate.

I trust I remain your friend in U.Boat lore, cheers.

i didnt mean to come off so strong, i wish i could have posted a bunch more movies but the board limits you to only 8 so i gave an other option and let people champion for their own personal fave. It's all in good fun anyway, nothing for anyone to get worked up over

My favourite ww2 movie is the britflick "The Cruel Sea" based on the real life harrowing exploits of Nicholas Monsarrat. It really illustrates in a graphical way the horrors of war and the lonliness of command.

Although not a WW2 film, from the same studio "A Night to Remember" is by far the best "sinking of the Titanic" film out there.

"San Demetrio London" is another fantastic film about a crew's effort to bring their stricken tanker home after their convoy is attacked in the North Atlantic.

All three of these films were made in the late 1950's in the Uk and are very honest depictions life at sea get them if you can.

Ok, first: im sorry to make some trouble but...

i cant understand that so many ppl think that ryan or bob are one of the best war movies ever.
but that depends what makes a war movie "good"! effects? realism? story?
i like SPR and BoB, but just for the effects/action. the rest is just stupid!
maybe bob and ryan are BASED on reality, but do you really think that a german ss unit (BoB - Crossroads) is "camping" in a field like "hey, here we are! shoot us, were just stupid nazis!".

or do you really believe that cpt. winters was standing uncovered in front of dozens of germans and was shooting without aiming, makes a kill with every shot and wasnt get hit by 10+ germans which are shooting back even from prone positions with rifles, mps etc.???

or in ryan, at the end. one of the allied MG positions. one after another "stupid nazi" was running in the field of fire like brainless robots! take a closer look at those scenes and you will get what i mean! (and there are severel scenes of that kind in both movies!)

as i watched those movies before my army time i didnt care about that, because i didnt realized it. but after it...i was just shaking my head :nope:

the germans or which enemy of the usa ever, are always stupid robots which are making mistakes no SOLDIER would ever do and thats just...ARGH! :hulk:
thats typical for all those american "we are the best, we are heroes " movies.

i like SPR, BoB and co. but i really hate this "picture" the germans are pushed into. dont get me wrong, i dont want to "protect" the nazi regime or anything like this, i just want to say that the german army was not so stupid like SPR and BoB show it, so be careful with..."reality".

whatever, back to topic  :

i think Das Boot is my nr.1

fredbass 02-24-06 08:25 PM

The best movie is without a doubt "Band of Brothers", if you consider a 10 part series a movie. :D

Sulikate 02-24-06 08:54 PM

Das Boot Editor's Cut... just great.

George Winston 02-25-06 12:48 AM

Nobody mentioned The Bridge On The River Kwai! .
I'm very fond of POW movies and Sir Alec Guinnes simply nails it.
