Of course we only need to play as a US sub commander hunting convoys in the Sea of Japan :arrgh!:

I'm not sure about that logic. The project team is assembling now - so I suspect that they will begin the brainstorming sessions around February / March.

I suspect they will go to the SubSim, Seawolves and other online fannatical communities and go through old threads to see what it is we all want. Therefore if the community is providing ideas at this stage, they stand a good chance of making it into the project specification.

Its much easier to give them ideas now, then ask them to add a feature half way through development

The first Type IX , U-37 was laid down in March 1937 and commissioned in August 1938.

The first Salmon-class fleet submarine was laid down in May 1937 and commissoned in March 1938. These boats displaced 2,200 tons submerged, had eight torpedo tubes, and a range of 11,000 miles at 10 knots.

So the Salmon, Sargo, and Tambor-class fleet boars all proceeded the Gato. I imagine someone will give a more detailed look at submarine doctrine, but these boats were certainly not built as panic-button response to the type IX. Submarines of that era weren't designed to fight one another anyway.

Wellll... it'll give you many interesting ways to die. Hope you enjoy commanding a sub with a two-minute crash dive time, a 100-meter crush depth, an ASDIC profile the size of a 40-story building, and the maneuverability of a pig in mollases! :rotfl:

Silent Service!! I had that for my old 8 bit NES! What a great game! It is a little dated now but for its time it was great, I blew many hours playing it!

I say let them concentrate on one thing, meaning it's hard enough getting it right for just one side. Imagine two!
I'm sure programing for both U.S. and Japanese gameplay will simply add more errors.
Maybe I'm wrong, but this makes plain sense to me.

No. Everything indicates that SH4 will be mostly new content based on an improved SH3 engine, so not that much new "programming" for both sides. I think it's quite reasonable to hope that there will be American, Japanese, and maybe even German U-Boats (if UBI wants to be really nice to us modders), that the game will be stable, and that it will be developed in a reasonable time. All in all, I am very happy that UBI has come to the same conclusion like many of us, in that it would be very unwise to drop a remarkable product like SH3 just because of not-so-great commercial success, and instead to continue the fantastic achievements of the original development team.

And as this is my first post-announcement post: Respect and congratulations to UBISoft for another step in becoming the number 1 publisher for serious, thinking gamers like me.

Pdubya 12-18-05 01:19 PM

At the risk of being labeled a "wet blanket", I will hold my expectations in check wrt Silent Hunter 4. Some earlier posts mentioned the belief that the feature set in SH4 will be honored. That would be true if UBI had unlimited time, money and manpower. But, as we all know, they don't.

I equate it with the kid at the dinner table- his eyes are bigger than his stomach, yet he insists he can still eat it all. All those features like wolfpacks, milch cows, more accurate nights, etc. take time to develop and start dropping by the wayside when the schedule gets tight. That's what happened with SH3 and not much has changed other than the fact the team will have members with the experience from SH3 of what worked and what didn't.

It should be better than SH3, but you never know... :hmm:

VilniusNastaviick 12-18-05 03:20 PM

Hopefully theyll allow us to play both.

It shouldnt be too hard to make two variations of same maps.

I will buy it, especially if they do not have starforce on it.
