I usually "teleport", but it's not teleporting as far as I'm concerned, it's just omitting the tedious visual representation of the journey home. I didn't see it, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

I'm slowly working my realism towards hardcoreness though and the journey home is the very least worrying thing on the list.

I usually sail all the way back. A big part of the challenge of being a U-Boat captain late in the war wasn't just surviving the escorts. It was running under the ever grimmer air gauntlet over the Bay of Biscay in both directions. If you just teleport back to port you're cheating half that equation.

Goin' back the way you came...its an adventure on its own! SO keep yer, eye on the Fuel Arghh!:arrgh!:

That's more than fair. If you're close enough to "dock at x" then you're close enough for it to be real.

As for the actual docking, I try to obey (my own) harbor traffic rules: never more than 5 knots when inside the breakwater and never more than 1 knot when approaching or leaving the pier itself.

gotta navigate:ping: . just ain't right to teleport. just last night, or was it morning:-? , i pulled up along side Bessel at Vigo to resupply. ran in submerged a bit of the way, was still light out, with 1m beneath the keel at one point

I have no choice but to sail back. 100% Realism.

It adds to the experience.

I always try and navigate back to port. Something about returning to the dock after a great patrol...........

That's better than me. I usually show off by coming in at 16 knots, before pulling up in the dock with a full emergency back crash stop. Only last night it turned into a full emergency back crash. Anyone know where I can pick up a new front end for a Type VIIB? This one is a bit dented :)

It depends on my torpedo situation most of the time. If I don't have the torpedoes to defend myself with I'll teleport back just so I can reap havoc again going back out.

I always navigate back home. I like the extra renown. Just started my first career on 65% Realism. Making it back to the port adds to the overall experience. As a commander its your personal duty to get your men back to their wives and children. Besides, you never know when some crazy DD ends up intercepting you along the way (it happens to me almost 20% of the time).

Torplexed 11-13-07 08:52 PM

I guess I always think of the teleport option in the context of the captain of the doomed Bismarck.

"British planes have jammed our rudders and we're circling helplessly sir!"

"Hit the flipping RTB button. Didn't they teach you anything at the Naval Academy?" :know:

Only way to find out if they're actually dead or just asleep ;)

I've read more than one post by kaleuns who rush in at flank speed, hit the wrong button and kill their entire crew, including themselves. Sometimes they'll ask the question "Does this count as Dead Is Dead?"

Reventlow 11-15-07 07:52 PM

Well, I have only completed three patrols but I have navigated all the way back to port each time. I do use the TC but I don't usually raise it above 256.
