I think I answered that already. It's not a plan to sell this thing, it's only for fun really, because if i were ever to do this more seriously:

- I would have to FIRST get permission from Ubi
- write MY OWN music for it

And than there's tons of other stuff. No, this is just for fun, like a hobby I have - it's no longer playing the games that is fun for me, but rather exploring them, modding them, and making things out of them that I like personally. I'm still in patrol 8 in my first career, and really haven't explored it much, thought through mission editor I've seen all the ships, icebergs, weather, subnets, mines, whatever.

PS. The bismarck story narrative is indeed a bit short in the end, but you can pause it! ;) And I put into the readme the quick history overview a link to the website that covers the whole thing pretty good.

dl'd and watched -- really fantastic work. some of those shots were pretty sweet -- i loved the bismarck emerging from the fog. You've every right to be proud.

Great film! The end was short but the cinematics were fantastic. I appreciated the first encounter with the battle over great distance very much. Good ode to SH3!

Brill movie, well *directed* and thought out. Its areal shame that SHIII doesn't have an option to render direct to avi or mpg from the camera position... this would produce really stunning quality movies. IMO there is a slight loss in the capturing via the screen cature software, re-rendering in Premier etc.... but its still very watchable.

Maybe some talented modder could come up with a means of using the external view camera to capture short AVI's

I thought I took care of that in the Long Version. :hmm:

Codec/Compression

I would definitely download this even if it would have 200 or 300 MB. As I said in my previous post, I like this stuff. Do you think the ratio size/quality is perfect "as is" or the quality (less compression) could be increased at the cost of increased size? I think compression is quite noticeable next to edges of the objects and godlike BISMARCK could possibly deserve increased bitrate and higher details (maybe resolution too). What do the others think?

Malc 09-01-05 06:37 PM

to be honest, with modern broadband averaging 2MB downloading a 300 MB file is quite acceptable. However the issue my well be finding a host that can accomodate the oringinal pure uncompressed movie and support the bandwidth of all these people downloading a 300mb or more file.

@type941 - what is the file size of the raw or full size avi before it was reduced and re-compressed for up-load. ??

Type941 09-01-05 06:52 PM

Avi is 13GB when I tried to save the Current 111mb version in plain Avi. That sucked btw.

But the size of it without compression? I don't know! If you are familiar with Adobe Premiere, it exports under setting you select, so you only know the final version. Of course you can first save as movie file in full, but that would be in excess of a few GB. However, i don't ahve the patience for that, as it's pretty much a useless activity. I got a setting I am ok with, and I prefer to use it because I believe in the 'if it's not broken - don't fix it rule'! :)

I am not able to 'recompress' the whole thing anymore - because I've removed all the source video files for the movie now - they took up about 30gb.

But, in future, I can make it a bit more quality, the size tradeoff won't be too high, as this is already high quality setting toned down (from 5 to 3.97 or smth). If I make it 4.3 for example, it can be better.

13GB for an 8 min movie :o :o

maybe the problem is the FRAPS capture software geerating such a large file..

I've used Premier Pro.. but hate the way it always re-renders captured video, even if you capture / import in the same format and don't add anything to it. Ive also found premier to crash on my system, although pro seems more stable than previous versions.

Personally I use Vegas Video 3 for most of my editing, and Ulead for DVD production. For editing mpeg video Womble is excellent (I often transfer VHS tv recordings to DVD and Womble allows quick editing to remove commercial breaks :) )

Like I said, we need some bright spark to come up with a mod where we can hit the space bar to start and stop the recording and save a clip in a compressed but standard format (standard video _PAL and NTSE would be cool :) )

Keep upi the good work - having played with lightwave to make a short intro to a DVD I can respect the time and effort you put in to making the movie... well done and looking forward to the next one ;)

I watched the longer movie, and I was amazed to find it just as good as the shorter version (I was afraid changing it might adversely affect it). This is an amazing piece of work. The camera angles are astounding. I think this movie could win first prize if there was an industry-sponsored competition for short films made from computer games.

Note that, if you change the name of the movie file to Intro.wmv, it will play as the game's intro movie.

My only criticism is that it's not available in a larger format. I realise it would take ages to download, but it's so good that it would be worth it.

Thanks Beery! :)

The total time I spent on video itself is actually just around 2 days. But may be I spent a few more days on reading up on the history of it, memorising it, and than many hours on making missions for each episode. The filming bit was actually very quick because i had a story board and knew what type of shots I wanted. I once was a production manager for an ad as a part of a university workshop - I must stay the experience there and working with one of europe's best DOPs makes me think that whatever I do, is just fun, because those guys are truly awesome when it comes to filming things. But of course, this time around I was more aware about this film, and at least trying to get some scenario and tell a story.

About larger format - well, it's too late, its source files are all wiped out of my HDD, but I'd have tought time hosting a file bigger than it is. This is the biggest I've made yet.

YOU (and CCIP, of course) would get all the space needed for your videos! :)

Again bravo, bravo! Great work.

Would have been nice if you could make the B&W version look aged, for effect.

I tried uploading a copy of the full color version but it failed. Restarting but it will take another 2+ hours.

Ammunition exploding. It's stock game graphics, I don't have the Hollywood mod installed yet (wasnt's JGSME arranged when I looked it up originally, so never really bothered with it, but might do it for future, since I think it makes explosions bit moe dramatic, etc).

Like I have in the credits - only those mods that are listed you see the effects of in the movie.

Thank you Avon Lady!
