August has discussed many things intelligently and fairly in the past. His attitude toward you is based on your constant childish prattle about the evils of our country.

It's times like these when I'm seriously wondering why I'm writing my master's thesis on Soviet Union's history (Between 1928 - 1945 and times of emerging Stalinism, no less). Guys like the OP really don't make it easier for us who have genuine academic interest in the subject. A cookie to anyone who can guess how many sentences I can usually say about this before someone asks if I'm a communist.

For anyone interested, I recommend finding Chris Ward's "Stalin's Russia" and reading the last chapter. The whole book is good in my opinion, but the last chapter is specifically interesting. Ward dicusses (among other things) the problem of how a historian should approach a subject that is seen by the majority as fundamentally evil and that's crimes are proven and documented. The same problem applies for many other fields, I reckon, like those interested in the Third Reich. The last chapter is only like 2 or 3 pages long, so if you happen to see the book in a library and have a minute to spare, I recommend checking it out.

Instead of good/evil false paradimes howabout a realist perspective its all about power? Also, there's a good book, called The Russians, which documents everyday/normal day life of russian citizens during the soviet union. Anyways lets try to stick with the forum topic please.

2: After this you come up with "it's not good/evil" argument. Without reading any of what I have written in my thesis, I might add.

3: You keep repeating a few key phrases all the time. Key phrases of which none require higher level of knowledge of the subject than high school's history books. Poorly and selectively read, I might again add.

4: After this you come up with the "realpolitik" argument, which is pretty much the most used argument you can ever come up with when discussing matters like these. Again without reading any of my work and knowing if I have taken the matter in the account.

I remain unimpressed. And on the border between insulted and amused that you assume I haven't decided to take the microhistorical level into account in my research.
