I'll quip here right quick and be off:

I have taken a Renown class down at long range with my deck gun. No pics to prove it as I was actually pretty stunned that the other ships couldn't see me. Anyway, from a long distance of say 6.5km or more I've been able to engage and sink targets in clear weather without being spotted. So it's just a matter of plinking away at them until they finally burst into flames and sink, or the ammo magazine runs dry.

The thing about simulations is that they are... simulations. Imperfect representations of reality, really. So it might not be too unusual to disable the main turrets on a battleship and proceed to chew her to bits in this game, as long as our Uboat stays outside a certain range and manages to put enough projectiles directly on target. Either of those two criteria are easily met under the right circumstances (no air cover, no other patrols around, good marksmanship skillage).

:salute:

There is a difference between playing the game and taking advantage of the things the designers got wrong. In this case I'm guessing it never occured to them that anyone would do something that "gamey".

krashkart 09-18-10 09:49 AM

Yeah, I see that point as well. I'm one of those that likes to exploit a singleplayer game to my advantage just for the heck of it. But the more I engross myself with the knowledge here the less I take advantage of the quirks in the engine. I'm tempted to start out with a IIa on my next career and play it clean for a change. The only habit I won't change is the use of a speed mod... sailing the long stretches drives me batty sometimes. :haha:

Also, I wanted to try to help settle the argument. Maybe it already was... I didn't thoroughly read the thread. But I hope it helps somehow.

I actually wasn't aiming at you with my comment. No need to explain.

Don't blame the designers they did their job fine and besides I don't see how I'm taking advantage I sunk it with my deck gun (which was no easy feat) because I was out of eels, not to break the game. Then found out that if he starts taking water he cann't fire his guns(on a side note I found out that the flak (light) can damage the large guns(in stock at least)). So I see it more as something to fix, also I'm not abusing this in anyway and besides just sink it with eels it's not like there's a pot of gold or a reward of some sort for doing it.

No harm done Krashkart

Sailor Steve 100% realism with GWX, I've got very good aim and I lot of time, it was a 24 hour battle of surfacing firing and diving over and over again from 7000m then later 400m after I got his guns off.

why are your stories always inconsistent of the same event?

JokerOfFate 09-18-10 10:25 AM

Guns off meaning disabled rather than actully off, poor choice of words due to me being tired.

Besides one message is for the 5th and one is for the 6th time meeting the Revenge

timmy41 09-18-10 10:43 AM

so youve been playing a few months and met the revenge more times than many have in several years?

JokerOfFate 09-18-10 10:50 AM

I've been playing for years if not soon after the game came out,
1,2 and 3 were random- all of them were sunk pretty quick.
4,5 and 6 were on purpose and sunk the Revenge- 5 sunk later

This is mostly due to the fact my old hunting grounds are near were they pass

Edit: Sorry for the bad typo

timmy41 09-18-10 10:55 AM

ah, i see. ok

I am always amazed and grateful for what the modders have done.

No problem matey....the accuracy can always be questionned, especially that of a game over five year old.

I just don't envisage anyone delving into the nuts, bolts and rivets of the SH3 engine anytime soon.

Perhaps with SHV if and when a final patch announcement is made.

krashkart 09-18-10 11:22 AM

System Shock 2 is an older game and people are still finding it, loving it, and making mods for it. SH3 might still have some voodoo in her. :DL

Let me ask you.. Do you think there is a chance SHV will EVER be what SHIII GWX, is ??

I just don't ever see it happening.. but what do I know.

It doesn't matter. If you can do something in the game that was impossible in real life then the game has a serious flaw. Taking advantage of that flaw is fine, but most of us try to play a little more historically, hence the flak you are currently recieving. No-one really cares how you play - that's your business and nobody else's. But you've started two threads now just to tell people how cool it is that you can do something with the game that we all consider more 'arcade' than 'simulator'.

Part of my background goes back to the UBI boards and threads about how many hundreds of thousands of tons people could sink in one patrol, or in a career. This is the same. The game lets you perform feats that no real-life kaleun could even dream of. Telling everyone how you did it is, indeed, bragging about "beating the game".
