I see Rome: Total War's family tree system has been carried over to Silent Hunter 5. I wonder if I will get increased renown by marrying into a family with high standing in the Nazi Party.
OMG this is great :yeah:
:haha:

For functionality, authenticity and better design, SH3 hands down.
In a gist: They've killed all the nicely designed menus and functions, and replaced them with an awful interface, slapped some new graphics and paint on it...
Why not enhance on the previous series, why waste time to turn your working interface into an ugly, dis functional, disabled, thing! :stare:

I AM WITH YOU!!!

I think it's safe to say each time we receive another full spread of bugs via SH, it is accomplished using a new set of developers. They also do not bother to compile any sort of knowledge base to use as a reference; hence the reason each new release is essentially the wheel re-invented.

It would be funny if not true when you consider submarine simulations have been around in one form or another for at least 26 years. I mean, how long does it take to get something right for a change? I understand that MicroProse's "Silent Service" for the Commodore 64 was so flawless because it was programmed to use only 64K of RAM but the basic model was established and everything from there on is essentially polish and enhancement.

I voted for the old SH3 interface, at least as far as the actual sub controls are concerned. Though menu wise (plus damage, torpedo, crew screen etc), I preferred SH4. This modern interface is a real turn off as far as I'm concerned, it just looks out of place.

The new interface looks like a crossbreed between O/S dialogues and an ipod. The Crew should also rethink their method of cleaning periscope lenses, they say sandpaper is not a good choice.

I hate the periscope interface of SH5. But external detail is jaw dropping and crew management is an improvement and how we can walk throughout the boat is a major plus for me - but then again SH3 with one mod we can move through the crew quarters and soon we will be able to do the same with the diesel room mod.

It's almost as if they left the GUI 'blank' for the modders. :hmmm:

Just saw flooding from xmass tree...
shii- wtf?
This looks so nasty unreal, flooding on meth. All valves vomit the same looking cons of water,no pressure differences.
I hope this will be fix in retail, if not, well i hope somebody mod that, or maybe me if my skills are good enough.

BYE

I voted for the new look. I just like the un-cluttered look.

That's what I'm hoping.:sunny:

Regarding flooding - there shouldnt be a pressure differential because flooding means the boat is LEAKING - and unless you plan on standing your uboat up on its end, the sub is under fairly similiar pressure everywhere - and thus the water INCOMING from the ocean is going to enter the boat at that same pressure...

I do agree that the offset periscope doesn't fit. However, overall I like the new interface. As for the "arcadish" speed control - it always frustrated me in SH3/4 that I had to move the throttle control myself - often multiple times - to get the speed I wanted. As a captain, I should be able to say "make turns for 3 knots" and someone handles it - and the new speed interface (assuming it functions like the old 688 click or right click to set speed) allows me to order a speed without having to find the right "setting" on the dial. After all - thats the engineers job, not mine.

Overall - I am pleased wuth the interface that I have seen. When the OSP goes away, I will find out how great the game is.

I think he means that some pipes/valves within non-seawater systems may burst, which would result in lower pressure leakage. The screen shot does look a bit like like a copy/paste job on the spray. However, having been through a real submarine flooding trainer, I can say that there's not much difference in the appearance of different pressures of flooding... it's just really cold and really scary.

I see what you mean about selecting the speed, but I think there would be a way to get the response you're talking about without making it look like an iPhone app. I would really like a way to order a specific course or specific speed without having to search for the right spot on the dial like you mention. It would be nice to have a classic-looking dial that you could right-click, then type in the exact course/speed.

The SH5 interface is just so...cold. That's the best word for it. The interface in the original SH is still my favorite - clean, functional, authentic-looking and largely idiot proof.
