Back to the Question...
I do not know. and little do i care. I am dissapointed, and have no more interest in the Future of the Silent hunter series. >maybe it ll come back in a few years.
Gimme GWX or LSHIII...

Gilbou 01-26-10 06:08 PM

I would have bought the game even with only one sub (hoping that a following expansion pack would add the type IX and perhaps 1/2 years to go until 1943).

I'm going back to SH3+GWX which I'll combine with my current SH4.
I will wait for a DRM-free version, if it ever happens (when the game is out since a long time, having it protected is of no use.. So I hope they will remove the DRM and online-stuff with the last patch for example).

Wow, lot's of great posts, I'm gonna give that new multi-quote feature a stress test here :D

Haha, well, I'm not happy about everything, either. I just try to keep an open mind until I actually play the game. Still, I am wondering if this trend of unflattering surprises will continue.

Yeah, well, we will always have SH3. If SH5 rocks our world, we win. If it tanks, we can hope Ubisoft Romania will design the next edition of Silent Hunter to be a continuation of the traditional U-boat sim.

Thanks for the beer, mate, and the wildness of these pre-release discussions is traditonal. If you remember before SH2, it was totally crazy! :rotfl2:

So what happens down the pipe if UBISoft is sold?

One would think that any new owners would also own the rights to UBISoft's stable but would not stand to generate any income from the SH5 server without resorting to new fees. It's unlikely that there would be a continued requirement to support a "legacy" product.

UBISoft states that they will issue some sort of patch but if sold they might not have the legal right to do so as the game(s) may no longer belong to them.

I think this, more than any transient connection problems, represents the biggest issue with the always must be on-line DRM.

or the game itself is discontinued or sold to another developer

the answer is:

congradulations, you are SOL

No doubt it will be playable off line. Some games check for updates then load. Others don't.

From Seeadlers link

Is there an "off-line" option?
No. The added services to the game (unlimited installs, online storage of saved games and the fact that you don’t need the game disc to play) require you to have an online connection while playing the game

GoldenRivet 01-26-10 08:33 PM

Also from the Q&A

What if Ubisoft decides not run these online services in the future? Will my game stop working?

Ubisoft is committed to being a forerunner in providing new exciting online service. If any service is stopped, we will create a patch for the game so that the core game play will not be affected.

XLjedi 01-26-10 08:40 PM

What's next?
  1. I cut the cost of my planned PC upgrade in half and buy an XBOX 360.
  2. Continue learning C# and XNA and build my own damn sub game. BTW, anyone got any VIIC Milkshape models laying around?

This is disingenuous at best and besides what else are they supposed to say. If UBISoft is sold down the road they will no longer own the game and so any promises of a magic patch are not worth the electrons it took to bring them to your screen.

Have a look at other game franchises where the original publishers have changed hands. Inevitably what happens is a "new" version is cranked out aimed at a new audiance and the legacy owners are hung out to dry.

Supporting the previous owner's software makes no business sense but remarketing a new and shiny version with no backwards compatibility will still find a market if the market was there in the first place. A couple of examples even though DRM didn't figure with any of them:

TOAW - COW vs. TOAW 3
Harpoon 3 vs. Harpoon ANW
Legion Gold vs. Matrix Legion Gold

And there's more. If this represents the future of PC gaming I think I'm going back to chess.

:haha: Is that 5 'o'clock shadow?

Activision killed Call of Duty for the PC this way. The new game won't allow independent servers which means no mods and no clans. You get thrown into a server with a bunch of strangers where the game is hosted by another person. If he leaves, the game ends and you all get thrown into another anonymous server of strangers. Welcome to the brave new world ruled by consoles. The PC game, especially the PC sim is a dying breed. :dead:

Wow. I'm late to the party (or funeral depending on your POV) and I've been absorbing it all. I must say I'm saddened too at the direction the industry is going in. I guess all the glorious eye candy is coming at the price of the game only ephemerally being yours...as long as they support it. Frankly, I worry if graphic applications will start going down this road too in the future.

I may go back to my old cardboard & counters wargames. :O:
