There are so many ship types missing in the Pacific area we have in SH4 that I just do not understand how the devs countenance the addition of U-boats, especially a type that never ever sailed.

At the very least they should have thrown us Pacific guys a bone, like say the Tench class, or Narwal, or playable IJN boats.

But noooooooooo... More Atlantic stuff that have been done for years ad nauseum.

:damn:

My sentiments precisely my friend...give us Pacific folks something more...

Totally agree!!! SH4 has the potential to be the ultimate sub simulation if could have been completed. I would have rather seen more compartments, an updated interactive cutaway crew management system and a some advanced repair features than this starwars add-on.

I Boats

I will probably pay for it - basically it is fun no matter what, however...
It is a retool and is in fact essentially total BS. Yes there was U Boat operations in the IO - whoopie do. The I Boats suffered stupid tactical doctrine (thankfully for us) they had the most potent torpedo and if the IJN allowed there CO's flexibility in operations like the US was forced too (we had some stupid ideas too and it went the way of the DoDo - unfortunately after getting some boats killed) as well as a pice of crap for a torpedo.
I enjoy the comments regarding Modern Subsims. ALL of these sims are them are frankly crap (though comical) - sorry but they are. They are based on people guessing (yes I know cause they have too) and do not accurately demonstrate any of the ships capaibilities as accurately as the should (just based off of Janes and other open source publications). I still think that it might be fun with a 60's or 70's based scenario as there is more accurate information than what is out there and used for todays modern SS/SSN/SSGN/SSBN classes.
But I have only been on Submarines for 23 years as a Sonarman.

When you say that subsims are crap in the following line

"I enjoy the comments regarding Modern Subsims. ALL of these sims are them are frankly crap (though comical) - sorry but they are. They are based on people guessing (yes I know cause they have too) and do not accurately demonstrate any of the ships capaibilities as accurately as the should (just based off of Janes and other open source publications)"

The sims you are referring are the ones dealing with modern sims, right.

Not ones like Sh3 and Sh4, cause aside from the increadible AI, they seem pretty acurate.

Right On

Yes my comment is directed at the Modern Cold War and Post Cold War stuff. The WW II Stuff is reasonably close in my humble opinion. I know that my comparison is based on real life experience (considerable) compared to the what some guy who has never sat a stack or experienced the real thing (watching Hunt For Red October is pretty amusing and frankly any idiot who buys into the whole Crimson Tide (Turd) thing deserves to be shot). I enjoy the WW II stuff as it CAN be based on tangible items vice drink 20 Red Bulls and dreaming up stuff to fill in the football size hole in information (talking about Modern Submarine Warfare).
If a cold war sim was to be done the 60's to 70's might be dooable.

Oh, I much perfer the Pacific to the Atlantic, but I think that giving the Atlantic boys a shot at the new graphics is fine.

I won't do it much, but I look forward to attacking a USN task force in a Walther boat.

It ain't real, or realistic.

That's ok with me too.

Q3ark 11-20-07 10:00 AM

Think i'll probably end up getting it, don't want to miss out on any cool new stuff. I know it's not historicaly accurate, but that's no bother if i'm feeling in an historical type of mood i wont run the expansion. Wonder if the type XXI or Walther boat or whatever it is could be modded over to the US side? That way i could play with it and not feel guilty about sinking alied ships. Hopefully if this is sucesfull we will see more from the SH series, maybe a Royal Navy addon with the T class long range patroll boats.

Don't worry, the main reason he doesn't like it is because he knows he will now have double the work to remove it from Trigger Mary

You've been talking with Dowly and company i see. Thats what he calls TMaru.
Sorry about that, it was a plain mistyping error   You can see that in the keyboard the Y lays next to the U and I wrote the reply fast (There's more spelling errors there) in my newly purchased Logitech G11 Keyboard, which I'm still getting used to. Never meant to offend your mod, which I personally use

I'm trying to figure out what is more unrealistic in that screenshot, A Type XXI sub in the Pacific or a Japaneese Carrier with aircraft on it that late in the war

Perhaps we should wait until we see what SH: WOTP 1.4 has in store before passing judgement?

I can tell you from my personal experience with the developers that no one here has more passion for the subject than they do.

"Properly", on the other hand, is a completely subjective term. If people have already made up their minds I very much doubt that anything the developers do would hit that particular mark.

Wait until 1.4, mods to follow, before saying it is completed. In my opinion a stock game is never completed anyway, but at least we should have a very moddable end product to build on so folks can tailor it to their own tastes, be it though large\small mods.

I also see one more very promising thing that noone else has picked up on in regard to this add-on (or so it seems):

Am I the only one who thinks that the "strategic options" and indirect control over task forces may be a technological pre-cursor to a surface combat game that the devs may be hoping to make for Ubi once they're done with this?

To my mind, that's another reason to support this add-on. If it keeps SHIV making money, then it may lead to a DC2 or even something bigger. Just speculating, anyway. It's only one step from using the "strategic options" in that game and using them in a more realistic way while commanding a surface ship and the taks force(s) around it :hmm:

Bring on Godzilla

Okay how about a modern SIM being the JMSDF and fighting (and losing to) Godzilla???????

:88)

Heck I dont care just give me something to blow up.

Capt Jack Russell 11-20-07 06:15 PM

I'm looking forward to the 1.4 patch I hope it makes this great game even better. I've bought and played every sub sim since the beginning of the PC age. I love Submarine sims! Bringing in surface stuff just dilutes the experience for me.

I'm still waiting for the day the sub-sim has the same "you are driving" feel as plane sims. I crave more detail ... and not just limited to the captain's perspective. When I recall all the sub movies I've grown to love, I remember moments like: the chief's solutions to bridging batteries, the crew forced to bail water between compartments, torpedos falling off the rack, blowing out debri to fool the enemy, etc. I want to be involved in every shipboard activity possible. For me the fun is preparing the boat, preparing the crew and then heading out for an adventure with plenty of unknowns and critcal problem solving.
