I was a big fan of SH3, so when SH4 was released I bought it straight away. I installed it and started playing and it was so buggy and incomplete I never touched it for months. I played SH3 for a bit in-between, then shortly after 1.3 was released I went for it again. It was a far more enjoyable experience, add in TM, ROW and LBO mods and it is fantastic game now. It shouldn’t take Ubi that long to make right, and really shouldn’t be left up to modders to fix a game, but they have done a amazing job, and I am happy with what I paid for now.

While the game doesn’t have all the little bells and whistles SH3 has with certain gauges working and such. The meat of the game is there now, and the emersion of the GFX are amazing at times, I never felt very immersed in SH3 when my crew had faces shaped like Rubbix Cubes (mind you my new crew in SH4 have evil devil eyes and watch me like they are going to kill me in my sleep). I have loaded up SH3 after playing SH4 for a while now, and difference in GFX are miles apart. SH3 is a great game, and feels allot more polished, but hopefully when 1.4 patch comes out it will complete the game and give us all the stuff that missing now and more.

Now I am no naval expert (Im a systems admin by trade), so I don’t know the way the boats act and all the other stuff related to world war 2 naval warfare and submarine life. So I am talking based on GFX and game play for me as a gamer, but it is allot of fun and SH4 feels to me allot more realistic a sim than SH3 did, I know allot of people think not, but like I said im just going from my knowledge and experience.

One thing I really miss is the captains quarters though, SH4 boats feel a bit claustrophobic when submerged only having your command and conning views, ideally a fully explorable sub would be amazing but I doubt that will happen anytime soon, maybe one day though.

Anyways for now I am hooked on SH4. :D

does it actually really mind?

this SH3 is old , SHIV is the new,
funny...if SHIV was a atlantic theather you could tell that SH3 was getting old.
but since its the PTO its a difference
so yet again...both theaters are different, so you cant really compare , or tell whats older...and in fact that SHIV is build on top of the SH3 engine...SHIV carries the same age underneath it ;)

but heck...you can debate about this for pages, but is it really that important?
they are both different theaters so you cant really tell whats better.
so enjoy the theather you play.

Hell yes it matters.

At the end of the day SH3 is better than SH4.:p

I think that Silent Hunter 3 is an excellent game set in the Atlantic, and Silent Hunter 4 is an excellent game set in the Pacific. Both have superb modders making wonderful enhancements to the game so that simpletons like me can really enjoy them. What more needs to be said. :D

I'm a fan of both games, I bounce from one to the other quite a bit. Once the new GWX update is out I'll probably be back to SH3 solid for a while. Once I've had my fill, I'll be back to SH4, mainly because SH4 has so much more room to grow, being alot younger. SH3 has a fair chunk of life in it yet, and the next GWX update may be the high point of the SH3 life. All depends if the GWX team is going to keep going or if this is the last update. But SH4 has tons of room to grow yet, and in a year or two will be as big as SH3 is now, with a choice of large supermods, and add-ons. At which point this debate will probably start all over when SH5 comes out. UBI has a tradition of releasing unfinished games, so it will most likely fall to the modders once again to polish the game.

SH3 is by far the more polished of these two games, but it also took years for it to become that way. The modded GFX and gameplay on SH3 are far beyond what anyone thought possible at the time. I am sure that in a few years SH4 will be mindblowing in the same ways. SH3 has lead the way and will continue to do so for a bit yet, but like an aging beauty queen, she will eventually step down for her successor, and SH4 will do likewise farther down the road.

I don't really think we are here to get anyone to do anything. As far as I see it we discuss games/ mods/ developements according to preference, taste and interest. Perhaps it's something about the consumer mentality across the pond, I don't know. What if we sing a company song, like they do in Japan :p

I believe this is exactly the thing that Leo was asking about to begin with. Why would a person who has absolutely no interest in SH4 be posting ANYTHING in a forum entitled "Silent Hunter 4:Wolves of the Pacific"? Perhaps there should be a forum for folks to argue the merits/disappointments of the two games, but shouldn't this forum be mostly a discussion of the game that it is named after? I understand comparisons between the two are inevitable, but what is the above poster (and others who do nothing but bash a game that they have never played) attempting to accomplish? Perhaps it's the consumer mentality across the pond (in the opposite direction-extreme sarcasm intended).

I can answer that.

Because SUBSIM is a forum for people who like/enjoy Naval Simulations and as such it will always be an open board. You can't maintain the level of support/interest that Subsim holds by saying "this is your corner, stay in it". Subsim will never actively support an 'Us & Them' policy.

Now, I agree that no-one should deliberately come into the SH4 or SH3 forums just to bash/flame the respective game but everyone must be allow to express their views openly.

It's then up to the moderators to, well, um, moderate.

TDK1044 10-10-07 11:31 AM

I think the original point has been addressed and the merits of both games explored. Closing thread before it becomes petulent ranting.
