Just finished my first patrol in S-39. 69,000 tons and the Medal of Honor. Got a little banged up in the Formosa Strait and had to putter along at 3 knots all the way to Java. Took forever.

To me the S-boats are very much akin to the Type VII, just without the stearn torpedo. Some views from the bridge look very much like the view from the German work horse. It probably is helped by the narrow fordeck jutting out from under your view from the bridge.
As I have posted, in another thread, the S-boat is really an inferior version of the Type VII. Roughly the same size, but much shallower diving, and a bit slower. I have to say. The Little boat is quite fun to sneak into harbors and unleash all hell, and then run away. Also, looking at the book I have about american subs, the range of the porpoise was in fact inferior to the S-boat (probably due to the two extra diesles, and diesle electric power systems. The S-boat were direct drive, like the German boats. The generators were clutched in. The Porpoise also has horrendous under water endurance at 5 knots compared to the S-boat that had much more underwater legs. |
Interior images of S-boats can be found starting here-
http://www.rddesigns.com/subs/s-boats.html Interesting reading on the S-boats from Ruhe's book "War in the Boats" and "Pigboat 39" by Gugliotta. The diesels could not be used for reverse, they had to be disengaged and the electric motors were used. Also, the Mk10 torpedo could not be reset in the tube for depth, if time permitted it could be partially withdrawn and the depth set. Otherwise the gyro angle was set in using a spindle (fabulous devices like the Mk8 torpedo angle solver were used). Reloads could be accomplished in five to seven minutes per tube. Yours, Mike |
Ok,
All my fellow S boat captians... a quick question for you all. I posted on the bug thread the following: During my time as a S boat Skipper, I have not once experienced a CTD. But, when I changed to a Salmon or Gato class boat, the CDT's became a regular part of gameplay. Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone validate this? |

After 6 months in S-24, I've decided I needed a new challlenge and retired her for a Salmon class fleet boat. This was my patrol history sinkings for S-24 (P-555).

Trying and learning here with an S boat.
I have a question: They're advertised to make 13 knots. Is it possible to exceed 11 knots without driving over a dam ? It doesn't really matter, but if yours it faster than mine I would like to ask for clues. :hmm: Got a kick out of the quotes from the Lieutenant on the S boat in WW II. The tropics are like that L-T. Sweat happens. Old Dog |

I think I'll give it another go, but after I get some better editing programs. I think I remember seeing on some of the tutorial threads something about some free editing software that's pretty good, I hope so, cause I don't have the money to shell out for photo shop at the moment |
I just started a new career out of Brisbane in 1942 in an S-42 class boat (USS S-46) and still love it... they're my favorite sub by far; though eventually I do want to try out a Balao.
I'm writing up my patrols on another gaming forum which you can check out here: http://www.octopusoverlords.com/phpB...ic.php?t=50309 |

I tried the S-Boat out of Brisbane, I enjoyed it, but didnt like the
reduced torpedoes like the bigger subs can carry. "When the last war call has sounded, and the fleet will sail no more, when a lasting peace is founded and no enemy threatens our shore when at last they write the story and the reason for victory is seen you will rise in honored glory YOU MIGHTY SUBMARINE |
